This update presents key insights from the September 9, 2011, seminar regarding the Desire2Learn (D2L) implementation at the University of Waterloo. The transition to D2L (learn.uwaterloo.ca) is progressing well with 11 courses offered in spring and 250 courses expected by fall. Training sessions, migration support, and course conversion tools for smooth transition from ANGEL to D2L have been discussed. Additional integrations include Turnitin and e-reserves. As we approach the winter term, considerable preparations and configurations are ongoing to support an effective launch for all 1300 courses.

Update on Desire2Learn Implementation Friday a.m. seminar 9 September 2011
Update in Thursday Bulletin • LEARN is D2L system name (learn.uwaterloo.ca) • 11 courses in spring – positive feedback • 250 fall courses (closer to 300 now) • 20 training sessions • Migration support – contract position for fall/winter to help with “tweaking” • Switch all 1300 to D2L in winter … Gulp!
Many configurations, examples … • Look and feel • Text, no icons, in navigation bar; navbar default • Colours/brand • Roles and permissions (Carpal tunnel page) • Instructor, Course Manager, Student, 4 different TAs, eportfolio, Test student • Naming conventions • “Holding tank” for roster loading • Etc.
Converting courses • Conversion tool built by D2L with our help • Converts ANGEL course content to D2L format • Uploaded files, HTML pages, quizzes, forums, etc. • Most require minor tweaking • More complex require alternatives and assistance (agents and actions, some question pool use, etc.) • Convert all 2010, 2011; first, those for W12 • Instructors request course (as for UW-ACE)
Some system stuff • Hosted - relying on D2L to monitor performance • CAS authN– logout of D2L destroys CAS ticket • Once/day updates for D2L class lists (5 for UW-ACE) • Email to external only (no longer internal to system) • Integrations • Turnitin integrated • E-reserves manual for fall, will be integrated for winter • iClickerpushing D2L for integration • Wimba replaced by D2L internal audio recorder • To pursue: Maple TA, Web conferencing, streaming server
