  5. Prep for the pilot • CAS authentication • Complication of not using a portal • Class lists by bulk upload (not automated) • Organizational structure • Similar to OUs in AD (Faculties, depts, CEL/campus, academic term, etc.) • Roles and permissions • Admin, Course mgr, prof, TAs, students, etc.

  6. Moving courses to D2L • Course conversion tool built by D2L • Extract a course package from ANGEL • Run through conversion tool • Results in a D2L course structure • Many courses could run “as is” from this • However, may want to tweak or reorg • Chance to rethink design and consistency

  7. Training and support plans • Support course moves from ANGEL • Training: • Group training in Faculties/departments • Some “just in time” training options • Videos • Documentation • Office hours by Faculty Liaisons • As needed, student overviews in class

  8. Bird’s eye view of new system

  9. Diff ANGEL D2L • Admin • Cascading roles • “Carpal tunnel” permissions • Tool “turn on/off” approach • Course tools • “Surfaced” in D2L (on tabs) • ANGEL Agents/actions • Voice recording

  10. Mobile in D2L • Mobile Web. Part of the LE, based on set of HTML5 pages. • 2GO. For Blackberry only (for now). Allows delivery of content and ePort functions. • Campus Life. Content fed through API to Mobile App Server, to device, converts to mobile formats.

  11. Gradual Course Roll-out • Spring 2011 (11 courses) • Iterative testing of conversion of courses • Continue roll-out Fall 2011, Winter 2012 • Fall: keep new students in one system • Winter: no live ANGEL courses • Retain ANGEL for 1 year beyond end of final courses (for grade appeals)

  12. Where will it run? • ANGEL runs on uWaterloo systems • D2L hosting is attractive • Two Toronto facilities (disaster recovery) • Secure, very large • Economies of scale, faster expansion • Still all our data • Planning one year trial of D2L hosting

  13. Support model • Remains very much the same • CTE Liaisons (1st line support in Faculties) • Jan, Sean, Sorena in IST-ITMS • CEL fully online course dev and delivery • Changes? • UW-ACE Ops (Aesops) – broaden group and mandate for more course tools • Greater consistency across courses

  14. Work in the queue • Automated class list loading • Grades to Quest • Tools integration • Existing (Turnitin, Ares eReserves, iClicker) • New? (Live interaction, media streaming) • Calendar – important dates, course schedules?

  15. Open House Feedback • Watcardphoto integration • What pilot courses chosen; timing for choosing Fall courses; 1styear students • Notify of D2L courses (student comment) • IP questions re: hosting • Partnership/devopportunities with D2L

  16. In the News • D2L buys ePresence (web conferencing system, in use at Waterloo) • Blackboard acquisition!? Potential buyer not specified.
