  1. THE FUSION SOLUTION!(BROADBAND OVER POWERLINES) “I think, therefore I am”. ...René Descartes (1596 - 1650) (French philosopher and mathematician) “ Impossible is Nothing !” ... Adidas

  2. WHAT IS BROADBAND? • The 2006 Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development(OECD )report is typical by defining broadband as having download datatransferrates equal to or faster than 256 Kbits/s, • FederalCommunicationsCommission (FCC) as of 2009, defines "Basic Broadband" as data transmission speeds exceeding 768 kilobits per second (Kbps), • The International Telecommunication Union Standardization Sector (ITU-T) recommendation I.113 has defined broadband as a transmission capacity that is faster than primaryrate ISDN, at 1.5 to 2 Mbits/s • Generally Broadband is often called "high-speed" access to the Internet, because it usually has a high rate of data transmission. In general, any connection to the customer of 256 kbits/s (0.256 Mbits/s) or greater is more concisely considered broadband Internet access

  3. 2009:Nigerian Communications Commission • Necessity for the integration of 2.3GHz spectrum . ( glo-1,MainOne, MTN WACS etc landing) • Enormous Advantages viz enhanced e-X services. • Perceived Snag: How Would ALL Nigerians Benefit(LAST MILE ACCESS)? • STATISTICS • Nigeria Population :about 150 million • Internet Usage as at June 2009: 11 million(7.33%) • (This Does Not Imply Individual Internet Connectivity) ... www.internetworldstats.com/africa

  4. The Imperative • The urgent need to not only increase general usage but enable individual ‘always-on’ access. • Must Commend Greatly the Input of The Service Providers(GSMA,CDMA,VSAT etc) . • The Drive requires a multi-pronged approach and emphasis on LAST MILE ACCESS SOLUTIONs . Hence BRIDGE THE DIGITAL DIVIDE

  5. BRIDGING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE • THE FUSION SOLUTION AS THE BRIDGE ! • WHAT IS THE FUSION SOLUTION? • Simply Put : Broadband Over PowerLines. • -Broadband Over Powerlines or BPL Is... • BPL MOTIVATION ! • -The possibility of utilising an already existing Ubiquitous Infrastructure/Network. • -The drive to ensure LAST MILE BROADBAND ACCESS

  6. BPL IMPLEMENTATION ARCHITECTURE • 2 BASIC IMPLEMENTATION ARCHITECTURE • - MV LINES IMPLEMENTATION • -LV LINES IMPLEMENTATION • A RECAP ON THE NIGERIAN POWER GRID NETWORK FIRST.

  7. POWER GRID SCHEMATIC A : GENERATORS –POWER IS GENERATED HERE; 10KV -16KV B : SWITCHING – STEP-UP TRX: RAISE THE POWER TO 132/330KV FOR TRANSMISSION C : PRIMARY DISTRIBUTION- STEP-DOWN TRX: REDUCES POWER TO 11/33KV D :SECONDARY DISTRIBUTION-STEP-DOWN TRX:POWER REDUCED TO 240/415V FOR RESIDENTIAL USE.

  8. ARCHITECTURE 1:MEDIUM VOLTAGE IMPLEMENTATION INTERFACING DEVICE(NODES) CONNECTS THROUGH T1 OR FOC TO INTERNET BACKBONE.THE SIGNALS ARE SUPERIMPOSED ON MV LINES,THEN TO WIFI FOR ACCESS.

  9. ARCHITECTURE 2: LOW VOLTAGE IMPLEMENTATION AS AN EXTENSION TO THE MV ARCHITECHTURE,THE BPL SIGNALS BYPASS THE STEP-DOWN TRXF BY HELP OF COUPLERS AND ARE SUPERIMPOSED UNTO LV LINES FOR ONWARD TRANSMISSION TO HOMES.

  10. AMENDING THE GRID • CERTAINS DEVICES NEED TO BE INSTALLED ON THE GRID TO ENABLE BPL • THEY ARE PROVIDER-PATENTED WITH DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES AND TRADE NAMES. • GENERALLY • NODES:COULD BE CONCENTRATORS,INJECTORS OR LAUNCHERS ETC BUT COME WITH DIFFERENT TECHNOLOGIES THAT INTERFACE THE INTERNET BACKBONE WITH THE MV LINES • COUPLERS: EITHER INDUCTIVE OR CAPACITIVE DEPENDING ON THE PROVIDERS’ TECHNOLOGY,ENSURES BI-DIRECTIONAL TRANSFER OF THE BPL SIGNALS ON THE MV/LV LINES, AND ALSO TRXF BYPASS. • BPL MODEMS:THESE ARE PLUGGED INTO THE OUTLETS AND WITH ETHERNET OR USB CONNECTION TO THE PC,BROADBAND ACCESS IS ENABLED.

  11. BPL CHALLENGES & ISSUES • ARRL: INGRESS & EGRESS Ingress: frequency interference on the frequency band(3MHz -80MHz) Egress :interference to neighbouring radio devices (Frequency Notching, E-Line technology TM) • THE NIGERIAN POWER PROBLEM

  12. BPL FEATURES • THROUGHPUT • ROBUSTNESS • SCALABLITY • UBIQUITY • SECURITY

  13. BPLs’ ADDED ADVANTAGE • BPLs’ ABILITY TO ENSURE LAST MILE ACCESS AND FURTHER DRIVE DOWN THE COST OF BROADBAND SERVICES. • SMART GRID • Prompt Detection & Isolation of Faults. • Electric cars

  14. RECOMMENDATIONS AND CONCLUSION RECOMMENDATIONS • THE URGENT NECESSITY TO IMPROVE THE POWER SECTOR. • CAPACITY BUILDING(INCORPORATING BROADBAND TECHNOLOGY AND MANAGEMENT INTO THE UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM ) • STIMULATING THE GROWTH OF BROADBAND INFRASTRUCTURE BY GOVT. SUBSIDY ON RELATED MATTERS. CONCLUSION . NIGERIA HAS TO RISE TO THE OCCASION ELSE BE LEFT BEHIND. . WE STAND TO LOOSE MORE BY RELYING ON OBSOLETE TECHNOLOGY AS MAINTENANCE BECOMES DIFFICULT.

  15. IBEC’S BPL SOLUTION C:International Broadband Electric Company

  16. LAST MILE SERVICE TO CLIENTS SUPPORTING VARIOUS APPLICATIONS.

  17. THE AMBIENT BPL NETWORK C: Ambient Corporation, U.S.A
