Remit of the Group The remit of the Short Life Work Group was to: • Develop a working definition for what a Key Performance Indicator is. • Devise a common, standard set of Key Performance Indicators for Risk Management which can be adopted throughout NHS Scotland. • Ensure that all Key Performance Indicators are outcome focused.

  4. What is a K.P.I. Key Performance Indicator • Of fundamental importance to the organisation. • A small number of them • Can be clearly measured • Can be influenced by the organisation • “Indicates” future performance

  10. Six KPI’s KPI - 1 Percentage of high/red incidents closed within target number of days. Intent To show how effective your arrangements are to address your most serious incidents in a timely manner.

  11. Six KPI’s KPI - 2 How often does your highest strategic risk management group meet versus a defined minimum number of times per year. Intent To show that you have strategic governance in place.

  12. Six KPI’s KPI - 3 How often does your highest operational risk management group meet versus a defined minimum number of times per year. Intent To show that you have operational governance in place.

  13. Six KPI’s KPI - 4 Percentage of risks reviewed/closed within agreed timescales. Intent To demonstrate how effective you are at managing your risks.

  14. Six KPI’s KPI - 5 Number of repeat high/red incidents previously closed. Intent To demonstrate how effective your organisation is at learning.

  15. Six KPI’s KPI - 6 Percentage of core operational segments with risk registers Intent To show the extent of deployment across your organisation of your risk management arrangements

  16. Conclusions & Recommendations • Intended to be applicable to all Boards • But not intended to make Board to Board comparisons • The detail of how to measure these is yours to define • Intended to encourage the sharing of good practice and peer learning.
