  1. 12YAS FRQ Prompts for APUSH Classes • Until the 1960s, mainstream historians emphasized the submissiveness of black slaves and the rarity of direct challenges to masters. More recent historiography places greater emphasis on the number and variety of ways in which slaves challenged the institution and asserted their humanity. Use events from Twelve Years A Slave to explain which historiographical view seems most valid. • Compare and contrast the description and portrayals of slavery that are provided by Thomas Bailey and the team of Steve McQueen and John Ridley. • Rank three major white characters, who appear in 12 Years A Slave, in terms of morality. Include in your discussion remarks about the extent to which treating slaves “humanely” exonerates specific whites for the cruelty of the institution as a whole. • To what extent is 21st century America harmed by slavery and its legacy? Use information from 12 Years A Slave and your knowledge of the present in your assessment.
