  2. Standard Measurement System (SI) • Universal METRIC system used to measure length, volume, mass, density, temperature, & time • Based on multiples of 10

  3. Length • SI Unit of length is the Meter (m) • Measures length & distance Using the metric ruler on your desk… • Measure the object in front of you in centimeters. • What is the measurement in millimeters? • One centimeter is divided into how many millimeters?

  4. Weight vs. Mass • Weight is the measure of the force of gravity on you • SI Unit of weight is Newtons (N) • Mass is the measure of amount of matter (stuff) an object contains. • Scientists prefer to measure matter by its mass rather than weight

  5. Mass • Unit of Mass in SI Units is Gram (g) or Kilogram (kg) • A triple-beam balance measures mass in grams

Using a Triple Beam Balance… • Check to see that the Pointer is pointing to zero. •  If it is not, check to see that all the Riders are all the way to the left at the Zero mark. • Adjust the balance by turning the Adjustment  Screwslowly until it points to zero • A. The farthest (biggest) beam reads only in 100 g increments.B. The middle beam reads only in 10 g increments.The weights in each of these must always sit in a "notch". They cannot be placed at arbitrary points on the beam.C. The small beam on the front can be placed to read continuously from 0 to 10 grams. • Measure the object in front of you in grams to the nearest 10th

Volume • SI Unit of Volume is the Liter (L) • Measures how much space an object takes up • Commonly express volumes in liters, milliliters, or cubic centimeters • Graduated cylinders measure liquid volumes • Meniscus: When the top surface of the liquid is curved…measure at the bottom of the meniscus

  8. VOLUME of Rectangular Solids and Irregular Solids • Rectangular Solids: Volume = Length x Width x Height • Irregular Solids: Submerge the object in a graduated cylinder

  9. Density • Density is Mass per unit Volume. • Two objects can have the same volume, but very different densities. Density = Mass / Volume (kg/m3) or (g/cm3) or (g/mL) Numerator is a measure of mass, and the denominator is a measure of volume

  11. Temperature • SI unit of temperature is Celsius (C) on the Celsius Scale. Water freezes at 0 degrees C and boils at 100 degrees C • SI unit of temperature is also the Kelvin (K) on the Kelvin Scale
