HISTORY • Form of Government: Constitutional Monarchy • Around/Since WWII: -National Action Bloc/ Independence Party -Suicide bombers • Origins: -Berbers were earliest inhabitants -Went through the rule of many dynasties -Golden age: 1578 to 1603 -18th/19th centuries: trade with Europe -Rif War (1921-6) -20th century/present day: political reform

  3. GEOGRAPHY • Climate -two seasons: rainy and dry rainy season= October/November-April/May dry season= May/June-September/October • Three major land regions: • Coastal Lowlands • Atlas Mountain Chain • The Sahara

GDP-$90.47 billion(2008) GDP per capita-$4,000 (2008) Natural Resources Industries: -phosphate rock mining and processing -food processing -leather goods -textiles -construction Poverty level: 19% (2000) Trade: -export: clothing, textiles, electronic components, vegetables, citrus fruits, fertilizers, etc… -import: crude petroleum, textile fabric, telecommunication equipment, wheat, gas, etc… -Morocco and the United States in 2004 negotiated a free trade agreement ECONOMY

RELIGION • Religious Practice • Religion vs. Government - the monarch is the supreme Muslim authority -Encourages and promotes tolerance and respect among religions -places several restrictions on religious activities and participation • Religious Groups - Islam, most of the Muslim population is Sunni Muslim -Muslim=98.7% -Christian=1.1% -Jewish=0.2%
