  1. Optimised Performance of Energy Supply Systems with Exergy Principles - LowEx Communities FraunhoferInstitute for Building Physics (IBP)Department Energy Systems Anna KallertTekn. Dr. Dietrich Schmidt

  2. Innovative city and urban concepts How will the development of city systems looks like in future? Intelligent electrity grids Plus-energy-buildings/ communities Smart Mobility & E-mobility Climate oriented city development Smart Infrastructures& supply systems Renewable energymix

  3. Supply systems Sustainable community energy systems Building systems Communities as energy systems

  4. The LowEx approach for communities • Application of LowEx approach for optimization of community demand adapted supply. The very efficient so called low exergy supply and use are of particular interest (see green boxes).

  5. Scope • Improvement of energy conversion chains on a community level • Significant reduction of energy demand and GHG-emissions • Integration of renewable heat and cold sources

  6. Objectives • The focus is on technologies and innovative concepts using low valued energy sources (LowEx) and renewable energies for the heating and cooling of neighborhoods and cities. • The objective is to demonstrate the potential of low exergy thinking on a community level as energy and cost efficient solution in achieving 100% renewable and GHG emission-free energy systems. • This includes: • Storage concepts • Networks / grids • Control systems und strategies • Business concepts System integration!

  7. Waste heat utilization and cascading via synergies ...only possible with smart management systems Residential Living Swimming pool Supermarket Ice rink Source: REAP Project, TU Delft

  8. Community case study in Heerlen (NL) - LowEx approach for the Mine Water Project demand Buildings suitable for use of low valued energy (LTH and HTC) distribution LT DH&C 3-pipes system supply Minewater Additional RES biomass, solar Integral system approach for the total built environment

  9. Assessment methodology Level of detail Level of aggregation

  10. Expected outcome • Design guidelines for optimised low exergy systems on community scale • Technology solutions and new development approaches for smart distribution solutions • Case study evaluation and best-practice catalogue • Exergy evaluation on community scale • Our target groups: • Energy supply and technology industry, • Project developer and housing companies, • Decision makers within communities, • Academia, research and education

  11. 1st Working Phase Meeting at NEA August 26th, 2014 Reykjavik, Iceland 17 participants from 7 EBC countries(AT, CH, DE, DK, NL, SE, USA)
