  1. Imagine…you are a student of the famous teacher Confucius. Like many older Chinese, he thinks that society has changed – and not for the better. He believes in old values and a strict social order. He is trying to teach you and your fellow students how to behave properly. You must respect those who war your superiors in society. You must set a good example for others. How will these teachings affect your life? Do Now

  2. CHAPTER 6 SECTION 2The Zhou Dynasties & New Ideas • Big Idea: The Zhou dynasty brought political stability & newways to deal with political & social changes in ancient China

  3. Zhou Dynasty • People from west China-over threw Shang Dynasty. (became longest lasting dynasty) • They claimed to possess the Mandate of Heaven • Zhou brought order to China • Form of Feudalism • Lords over saw & protected peasants who farmed land • Eventually lords became less loyal to Zhou King: led to Warring States (time of Civil War & territorial fighting) • Zhou weakened and ended: disorder for 40 years. • Qin dynasty later took over

Confucius & Society • Due to instability during Zhou dynasty- intellectual movement swept through China • Confucius • Taught people needed a sense of duty to be good • Ideas are known as Confucianism- (way of behaving) • Analects-book of his teachings • Stressed family order, respect for parents, & ideas about government: have become central beliefs in China • Example: Do not do unto others, what you would not want others to do to you.

Daoism & Legalism • Other beliefs developed during Zhou dynasty • Daoism • Stressed harmony with the Dao • Be like water and flow • Most famous teacher Laozi taught, not to seek wealth or power. • Legalism • Stressed man is evil by nature & need to be controlled • Political philosophy without religious concerns • Society needed to be strict • Always prepare for war.
