9.4- Returning from War • African American soldiers who returned from World War II found many new opportunities available to them. • GI Bill- an act designated to help soldiers attend college or receive advanced training in a career. • It also provided loans to returning soldiers who wished to buy homes
GI Bill • African Americans found it difficult to take full advantage of the bill. • It was difficult for many soldiers to attend college with a family. • College admission boards discriminated against African Americans.
Effects of the GI Bill • Black college enrollment increased greatly. • Many attended HBCUs. • United Negro College Fund (UNCF)- created to give financial support to AA students
