  1. The Rise of Red Army

  2. The Soviets were just a collection of workers and soldiers. They had no discipline or proper training. But they were useful, for Lenin to gain power.

  3. But Lenin was worried. He knew that their enemies were coming. He also knew that the Soviets would lose against a professional army.

  4. So, Lenin had a plan…He would create a strong and a disciplined army.

  5. To create this new army, Lenin needed help.He chose, Leon Trotsky for the job.

  6. Trotsky was now the leader of the new army. The Red Army.

  7. First, Trotsky disbanded the old Russian Army.He didn’t trust them.He wanted total loyalty from his men.Enough to die fighting for the Soviet cause.

  8. Initially the army had 300,000 loyal volunteers. But as the Red Army began losing men in battles, there was a need for more soldiers.

  9. Trotsky fixed this problem. He introduced conscription. Forcing all able bodied men to join the army. The Red Army increased to 3,000,000 men.

  10. But having a large army was not enough.Trotsky also needed to train his troops. He hired experienced officers from the old Russian Army.

  11. But Trotsky didn’t fully trust those officers. After all, they came from the old Russian Army. So, he assigned Commissars to each unit. Their job was to make sure that the Officers stayed loyal.

  12. If a Commissar suspected anyone of being disloyal or cowardice, then he had every right to shoot and execute them on the spot.

  13. With 3,000,000 soldiers and experienced officers, the Red Army was now one of the most powerful forces. Now it was ready for its enemies.
