  2. Regional Economic Development The Government of Canada believes that strong regions are the building blocks of a strong nation. Regional development agencies: • Western Economic Diversification Canada (WD) • Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) • Canada Economic Development for Quebec Regions (CED-Q) • Federal Economic Development Initiative in Northern Ontario (FedNor) • Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor) • Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario) 2

WD Vision and Mandate Vision • “To be leaders in creating a more diversified western Canadian economy that has strong, competitive and innovative businesses and communities.” Mandate • Promote the development and diversification of the economy of Western Canada and to advance the interests of the West in national economic policy, program and project development and implementation. 3

WD Organizational Structure • WD is headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta, which is also where the Deputy Minister is based. • Offices in each of the four Western provinces: Vancouver, Saskatoon, Edmonton/Calgary, and Winnipeg • Liaison Office: Ottawa • Each region is managed by an Assistant Deputy Minister

  6. WD PRIORITIES WD is not a “sector” focused organization; rather, WD has operational priorities that encompass projects in all sectors. These operational priorities include: • Technology Commercialization, • Trade and Investment, • Business Productivity and Competitiveness WD does not fund private sector firms. 6

WD’s Experience • Projects in Regina: PTRC, City of Regina, IPAC, Communities of Tomorrow, University of Regina/University of Saskatchewan WEPA – Enterprise SK and WD work together forming joint projects with 2 years left on the agreement Collaboration between universities and SIAST is a good thing – ILO offices Private Sector involvement is not a bad thing to a project Monitoring and Payments is critical to our projects.

What Not to Do Buy equipment without looking at the contribution agreement Facility planning without knowing the costs we will cover and what percentages Don’t talk to WD staff about your questions Equipment has to arrive in Regina by March 31, 2011 Results have to have an economic impact for Saskatchewan or Western Canada.
