  3. Treaty of Versailles June 1919 • Germany was • Disarmed • Stripped of colonies • Forced to admit guilt for war • Allow French occupation in Rhineland (15 years) • Pay reparations to Great Britain and France

Treaty of Versailles • Territories once controlled by Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Russia were taken by the Allies • Independence was granted Estonia , Latvia, Lithuania, Finland, and Poland; Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia were established • Signers of the treaty join an international peacekeeping organization • League of Nations: called each member nation to stand ready to protect the independence and territorial integrity of other nations

Fourteen Points Woodrow Wilson This was Wilson’s program for all countries • No more secret treaties or alliances • Freedom on seas in war and peace must be recognized • Equality of trade in all nations who agree on peace • Reduction of national armaments • Colonial claims will be cut down without favoring any particular country • Self- determination for many groups in the Austro-Hungarian empire the right to rule yourself

Battle for Ratification IN THE UNITED STATES The person responsible for rallying the republican party against ratification of the Treaty of Versailles was a republican senator named Henry Cabot Lodge. He led a group of republicans that would accept joining the league of nations and the treaty if certain reservations were added to the agreement, but Wilson refused to budge so the Treaty was never passed by the senate.
