Las Cases is NO Hero!! • Millions of Native Americans die due to the diseases Europeans were Immune to • With the loss of Native American Labor Plantation owners looked for a cheap workforce for their sugar and tobacco plantations • Bartolome de Las Cases suggested Africans should replace Native Americans as a slaves

A Grave Injustice • When spain legalizes the sale of slaves millions of slaves begin to be sold worldwide • The Slaves would be captured and transported over 1000 miles to the coast to endure the Middle Passage • African Slaves would be packed by the thousands in spaces the size of coffins to travel across the Atlantic to the Americas • One in Six slaves would die on this journey by disease, malnutrition, suffocation, or suicide

Worldwide Crisis • The Slave Trade led to African Diaspora as over 12 million slaves were brought to the Americas in 340 years • While slave trade occurred worldwide, over 600,000 slaves were brought to the British Colonies in America • In the Colonies there were strict laws against the slaves and slave codes that led to the Abuse and Death of the slaves • While SOME slaves were treated kindly, most were mistreated and abused by their owners

  6. Family Matters • African Slaves would hold onto, and share, their cultures to create a new African American Culture • While slaves tried to hold onto their families, they were often torn apart and prevented from moving with their families

Culture Club • Religion became central to slave life as they practiced Christian and more traditional African religions • Many Africans would express their religious beliefs through Spirituals to tell stories of hope, joy, agony, and sorrow • Slaves also used their art and dance to hang on to their past African Cultures
