  2. A long time ago they came from Africa on boats.

  3. They wanted to be free.

  4. Some people had special papers.

  5. Some people didn’t.

  6. The people who didn’t were slaves. They were not free.

  7. Slaves had to work hard.

  8. They were not aloud to read.

  9. They were not aloud to play.

  10. These people were bought and sold for money.

  11. It made them sad when they had to leave their families.

  12. They lived on farms called plantations.

  13. White people with a lot of money lived their.

  14. The white boys learned to read.

  15. They white girls learned to sew and cook.

  16. They had to work instead.

  17. They made a lot of money for Maryland.
