Social Networking History • In 1982 the word “internet” is used for the first time. • IRC (Internet Relay Chat) was invented in 1988. • In 1998, Google opens its first office, in California. • MySpace began in August of 2003. • Face book is a social networking website, launched on February 4, 2004. • Twitter was launched July, 2006.

Professional Advice: A 6th grade student from New York City asked: “How would you know if you were being lured by a sexual predator?” Detective Rory Forrestal answers: “The only way you could be really sure you’re not talking to a sexual predator is to only chat, e-mail or text the people you know...”

  5. Facts & Statistics: • MySpace is said to have over 400 million members and counting. • Sexual predators do exist and are a very real threat. They target both boys and girls of all ages and use the anonymity of the Internet to their advantage since they can be whomever they want. • 89% of sexual solicitations are made in either chat rooms or Instant Messages • 20% of children age 10-17 have been solicited sexually online; that's 1 out of every 5 kids • 9 out of 10 parents will never know that any inappropriate contact has occurred

  6. Steps to Stay Safe: • Do not put information about yourself like your address and phone number on the internet. • Make sure you know who you’re talking to on the internet.

  14. That’s right kids! Don’t give information. Don’t want no stranger to come in your station. Don’t give out your phone number, the name of your school or even your address cause that aint cool! Word!
