  1. Do Now 9/11/19 • Take out your HW from last night. • Text p. 16 & 17, #4-24 evens • Copy HW in your planner. • Text p. 23-24, #4-24 evens, 30, 32, 33 • Quiz sections 1.1-1.3 Friday 9/13 • Complete “Exploration 1” on page 12 in your Student Journal. You may work with a partner next to you.

  2. 22 22 Left Polygon Perimeter = Right Polygon Perimeter 5 + x + 5 + 2 + x + 2 = 3 + 3/2x + 5 + 4 + 2 + 2 2x + 14 = 3/2x + 16 x = 4

  3. HomeworkText p. 16 & 17, #4-24 evens

  4. Learning Goal Learning Target SWBAT solve linear equations in one variable • SWBAT solve equations with variables on both sides

  5. Equation- • mathematical sentence with an equal sign Like a scale, both sides must be EQUAL in order to be balanced.

  6. Section 1.3 “Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides” How can you get the “unknown” by itself? 7 - 8x = 4x – 17

  7. 7 – 8x = 4x – 17 To get all the ‘x’ variables on one side “add 8x.” + 8x + 8x 7 = 12x – 17 To get the “12x” by itself “add 17” to both sides. +17 +17 24 = 12x To get the ‘x’ by itself “divide by 12” to both sides. 12 12 2 = x

  8. Check Your Work! 7 – 8x = 4x – 17 x = 2 7 – 8(2) = 4(2) – 17 Are both sides equal?

  9. Distributive property 9x – 5 = 2(2x + 7.5) 9x – 5 = 4x + 15 To get all the ‘x’ variables on one side “subtract 4x.” -4x -4x 5x – 5 = 15 + 5 + 5 To get the “5x” by itself “add 5” to both sides. 5x = 20 5 5 To get the ‘x’ by itself “divide by 5” to both sides. x = 4

  10. Distributive property 8(x + 4) = 5(13 + x) 8x + 32 = 65 + 5x To get all the ‘x’ variables on one side “subtract 5x.” – 5x – 5x 3x + 32 = 65 - 32 - 32 To get the “3x” by itself “subtract 32” from both sides. 3x = 33 3 3 To get the ‘x’ by itself “divide by 3” to both sides. x = 11

  11. Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides… If Possible Isolate the variable! Get ‘n’ by itself. 2 – 15n = 5(-3n +2) 2 – 15n = -15n + 10 +15n+15n 2 = 10 No Solution

  12. Solving Equations with Variables on Both Sides…If Possible Isolate the variable! Get ‘x’ by itself. 3x +10 – x = 2(x +5) 2x + 10 = 2(x+5) 2x + 10 = 2x + 10 -2x -2x 10 = 10 Infinitely Many Solutions

  13. Guided Practice 4 + 2x + 8 = 2(x + 6) 7p + 6 – 3p = -38 + 4p 4p + 6 = -38 + 4p 2x + 12 = 2(x + 6) 6 ≠ -38 2x + 12 = 2x + 12 No solution Infinitely Many Solutions

  14. Geometry Connection The figures below have the same perimeter. Find the perimeter. x – 1 = x 4x – 2 = 3x + 7 -3x -3x 1x – 2 = 7 +2 +2 x + 2 x + 2 x = 9 The perimeter of both figures is 34 units. x + 3

  15. 24 Homework 7 12 • Text p. 23-24, #4-24 evens, 30, 32, 33 13 3 6 2 10 4

  16. Numbers About Me… Create a collage/poster describing yourself using a minimum of 8 numbers How many times I’ve been on an airplane? My height – in inches Grade? Sports # Number of people in my house Favorite #? Number of siblings? Cousins? How many times I’ve been to DisneyWorld? Age How many days old I am? States I have visited? Lived? Birthdate Sum of the digits in my phone number? How many pets I have?

  17. 16 11 3 Years teaching @ Howell South My lucky #! Awesome sons Mr. Seiler Height 74 1962 Years my favorite baseball team began playing in inches Numbers about me… 15 36 46 # of miles I drive to and from school each day Countries I’ve visited Sum of the digits of my cell phone #
