  1. Do Now 9/9/19 • Copy HW in your planners. • Text p. 8 & 9, #6-14 evens, #32-38 evens • Go to the Formative website. “What Does an Equation Look Like?”

  2. Learning Goal Learning Target • SWBAT solve linear equations in one variable • SWBAT solve simple equations using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division

  3. Section 1.1 “Solving Simple Equations” x + 7 = 10 Left side Right side ‘x’ has to be 3 in order to make the equation balanced. Like a scale, the left side and right side must be the same in order to be balanced!

  4. Equation- • mathematical sentence with an equal sign Like a scale, both sides must be balanced

  5. How can you get the “unknown” by itself? “Undo” the operation by using the INVERSE (opposite) operation to both sides of the equation.

  6. Solving Addition Equations… Isolate the variable! Get ‘m’ by itself. m + 24 = -18 To get the ‘m’ by itself get rid of “adding 24.” • 24 • 24 Do the opposite. “Subtract 24.” m = -42 Whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do the other side.

  7. Check Your Work! m + 24 = -18 m = -42 (-42) + 24 = -18 Are both sides equal?

  8. Solving Subtraction Equations… Isolate the variable! Get ‘y’ by itself. -13 = y - 15 To get the ‘y’ by itself get rid of “subtracting 15.” +15 +15 Do the opposite. “Add 15.” 2 = y Whatever you do to one side of the equation you must do the other side.

  9. Check Your Work! -13 = y - 15 2 = y -13 = (2) - 15 Are both sides equal?

  10. Solving a Multiplication Equation -2y = 28 “Undo” multiplication by dividing both sides of the equation -2 -2 y = -14

  11. Check Your Work! -2y = 28 y = -14 -2(-14) = 28 Are both sides equal?

  12. Solving Multiplication Equations… 2 2 = 4 3 3 m ∙ ∙ 2 3 5 2 1 Multiply by the reciprocal or multiplicative inverse. 6 m = 5 1 1 m = 5

  13. Solving a Division Equation j = -7 5 5·· 5 “Undo” division by multiplying both sides of the equation j = -35

  14. Check Your Work! j = -75 j = -35 -35 = -7 5 Are both sides equal?

  15. 1). ¾ = r – 2½ 2). πx = 3π 3). f + 0.4 = -2.7 4). e/-7= -2 Try It Out 1). ¾ = (3¼) – 2½ 2). π(3) = 3π 3).(-3.1) +0.4 = -2.7 4). 14/-7 = -2

  16. What is the missing angle??? A 35° 35° + x° + 90° = 180° 125° + x = 180° x° B - 125° -125° C x = 55°

  17. Numbers About Me… Create a collage/poster describing yourself using a minimum of 8 numbers How many times I’ve been on an airplane? My height – in inches Grade? Sports # Number of people in my house Favorite #? Number of siblings? Cousins? How many times I’ve been to DisneyWorld? Age How many days old I am? States I have visited? Lived? Birthdate Sum of the digits in my phone number? How many pets I have?

  18. 16 11 3 Years teaching @ Howell South My lucky #! Awesome sons Mr. Seiler Height 74 1962 Years my favorite baseball team began playing in inches Numbers about me… 15 36 46 # of miles I drive to and from school each day Countries I’ve visited Sum of the digits of my cell phone #

  19. Homework • Text p. 8 & 9, #6-14 evens, #32-38 evens
