This lesson focuses on the life cycle of stars through hands-on activities and collaborative learning. Students will investigate elements in stars, record observations, and engage with the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram. The lesson includes a balloon experiment to model supernovae and black holes. Additionally, students will use vocabulary such as white dwarf, red giant, and magnitude to enhance their understanding of celestial phenomena. Through group activities and discussions, learners will critically analyze the classification of stars and their atomic structures.

Fingerprinting V: 2 • Using Pages RM 19-20, determine the elements in each star. • **Teacher will model how to do this** • 2. For each star, put an “X” next to the element name for each element it has on RM 21.
Conclusion Questions V: 0 Copy and answer the following on page 28 of your INB… • What elements are found in all five stars? • Why do you think these elements are found in all five stars? Think about their atomic structure and placement on the Periodic Table. • Do any of the stars contain all eight of the given elements? • Which of the stars do you think is the oldest?

Life Cycle of a Star Lab V: 0 Record observations and data on the handout. • Inflate a balloon to about 45cm in circumference. • Cover the balloon in aluminum foil and measure the circumference of the “star”. • Measure the mass of the “star”. • Pop the balloon and gently crush the foil (NOT ALL THE WAY) to represent a supernova. • Measure the new circumference and mass. • Crush the foil a second time, measure the mass and volume. • Crush the foil a final time to represent a black hole.
