  3. GEOGRAPHY Scotland has a variety of landforms in the three main land areas. The Highlands have lots of mountains, more than England. They include the Grampain mountains and Ben Nevis. The Central Lowlands are mostly flat and green everywhere. Some say it’s the most beautiful scenery in Europe. The Southern Uplands are hilly. The Cheviot Hills are there too. Scotland has many swamps, marshes, and bogs. There are many islands in Scotland. Scotland itself is on an island located in western Europe.

  4. GOVERNMENT Type of Government: Monarchy Description: • Elected parliament governs the country • The prime minister leads the government • The prime minister can be elected unlimited times • The voting age is 18 • There is a 740-member House of Lords • There’s a House of Commons

  5. CLIMATE Scotland’s climate is temperate. The average temperature is between 30 degrees Fahrenheit and 80 °F. The usual winter high is above 40 °F and the summer high is below 72 °F.

  8. COMMON FOODS Scotland’s main foods are meat and grain. Haggis is a world-famous delicacy. It has a mixture of vegetables and sausage. Scots also like mince or ground meat and stew. Gateaux are fancy cakes made of grain. Fish are very plentiful. Fish and chips is another popular dish. Scots also enjoy tatties or potatoes, curry, and bannocks (barley and oat biscuits.)

  9. SPORTS & HOBBIES Scotland has many sports similar to America’s sports. Scots invented the game of golf in the twelfth century. They let sheep graze the fields, to keep the grass short. Football is actually soccer in Scotland. It is the favorite spectator sport. Scots play lawn bowls where you roll bowling balls down “greens” and you try to get it closest to a white target called a jack. Snooker is a billiards game that’s popular. Tennis is another popular game in Scotland.

  10. FAMOUS PEOPLE Many famous people in America are from Scotland or Scottish. Robert Louis Stevenson is a very famous author who wrote “Treasure Island”. Sean Connery is a famous actor that was in one of the movies “James Bond”. David Hume is a famous philosopher. He changed the minds of many people.
