The process below presents details tutorials about model retouching in Photoshop. Most examples have a before-vs.-after-comparison. You can follow the Image retouching with Photoshop step-by-step. 1. Start a Raw File We want to begin Image retouching with a raw file or a premium image. If you want to follow this Photo retouching tutorial, download a high-quality image. Here, we will be starting with a PSD file. It needs to convert from a Raw Camera file. In this Model retouching in Photoshop, the most important thing is the lighting. You want lighting select a model with smooth skin. It helps to fill shadows and ensures the model will have soft skin even right out of the camera. 2. Frequency Separation We are going to begin Model Retouching in Photoshop by duplicating the background layer two times. Then by rasterizing both of those layers (Right Click>Rasterize Layer). First, we named this layer on the bottom “lo” and the layer on top “hi”. We applied a 10px Gaussian blur 2/8

  3. to the “lo” layer. Then we clicked the “hi” layer and went Image>Apple Image and used the settings as we need. Next, we set the “hi” layer to the blend mode “Linear Light”. Now we configured to smooth tones in the skin and launch removing blemishes. 3. Skin Color Smoothing We are going to click the Healing Brush Tool (J) and set the “Sample” option in the top control bar. We clicked it to “Current Layer” and start working on the “lo” layer. We are going to mark the bags under models eyes and smooth them out. Working on this “lo” layer means that we are just editing the color of the picture and not displacing any texture. This will confirm that her skin texture stays perfectly integral while we just lighten below the eyes. This is the core part of Model retouching in Photoshop. 4. Heal & Remove Blemishes Click the ‘hi’ layer and select the Healing Brush tool (J) Again. It ensures that you still contain the Sample option set to Current Layer. Then start sampling (hold down Alt/Opt to test area) clean parts of the skin and paint over blemishes that you notice. 5. Fill out the Hair Hair is a great part of Model retouching in Photoshop. However, due to its intricacy, we have to choose an image without much hair. We will learn hair retouching for another tutorial. Here we have to fill both areas besides her cheek with hair. Start by clicking Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Alt/Opt + E to combine all layers to a fresh coating. Click the Rectangular Marquee tool and drag a selection over the right side of the picture. Then click Cmd/Ctrl + J to pop that up onto its layer. Now, Click Edit>Transform>Flip Horizontal and try to drag it over to the left side of the picture with the help of Move Tool (V). 6. Frequency Separation AGAIN! Use the merge the entire layer’s hotkey again to demolish all of our layers together. Then pop that up onto its layer and click Cmd/Ctrl + J to copy that layer. Now Name the lower layer “lo 2” as well as the top layer “hi 2”. We are going to blur the “lo 2” layer by 10px and affect the “hi 2” just as we had done previously. We also want to go Filter>Sharpen>Smart Sharpen. Now we will add approximately 150% of sharpening at a radius of “1.2px” to the “hi 2” layer. Frequency Separation is one of the most important parts of Model retouching in Photoshop. Don’t forget this part 7. Continue Smoothing Tones 3/8

  4. Select the “lo 2” layer and click the Brush tool (B) to paint the highlights and shadows again. Do it with brush cloudiness of “10%” to flatten this highlights and shadows. 8. Blur the Skin We can consistently drop this layer later if we do not like it. To blur the skin a bit all we need to paint with black in the layer mask that we added to the “hi 2” layer. Try to use the Brush tool (B) set to the opacity of “10%” and softly paint where need a few details. 9. Fresh Skin Texture We now want to add our fake skin texture to confirm that her skin does not look like smooth, blurry stuff. We will create a new layer. We will name it “Skin Texture Small”. Then we have to go Edit>Fill and choose “50% Gray” from the content drop down. Then we will go Filter>Noise>Add Noise and add 25% noise with the help of “Uniform” and “Monochromatic” ticked on. After that will move on Filter>Stylize>Emboss and set the angle to about 85 degrees and height to “2” and the amount to around “200%”. Adjust the layer to the blend mode “Soft Light”. It is the base texture! 10. More Skin Texture We have to Duplicate that skin texture layer and rename it “Skin Texture Large”. Then we will click Edit>Transform and set the width and height of 200% up to the control bar. 11. Masking the Texture We need to mask this texture into accurately where we want it. Right now it is out of control. You can hold down your Alt/Opt key to choose new layer icon to add a layer mask filled with black. You need to do this with both skin texture layers. Now we will use the Brush Tool (B). Again It should be set the opacity of the tool to “10%” and paint with white. Try, to begin with, the small texture layer and then paint. 12. More Blemishes At this point, we will create a blemishes layer to touch up anything. We need to Create a new layer and name it “Blemishes”. Then we need to use the Healing Brush Tool (J) and set the Sample to “Current & Below”. It will permit you to use a subtle brush. 13. Retouching Eyebrows The eyebrows are imperative. In this part of Model retouching in Photoshop, we will Retouch Eyebrows. We can start by merging all layers to the latest layer with Cmd/Ctrl + Shift + Alt/Opt + E. We need to Use the Lasso tool (L) to create two selections. Now click 4/8

  5. Select>Modify>Feather and feather the limits of the selection by 5px. 14. Trimming the Eyebrows We will click Cmd/Ctrl + J to pop those two pieces of skin up onto the latest layer. Then we will jump to the Move tool (V) and nudge the skin downward until we have trimmed the eyebrows. 15. Masking the Eyebrows The skin does not quite look right because you can notice edges. Here we will Add a layer mask to this “Eyebrow Trim” layer. This will allow us to paint away the bits of the eyebrow skin. 16. Cleaning Up the Eyes Here we learn about the eye cleanup of Model retouching in Photoshop. First, we will create one more new layer and name it “Eye Blemishes”. After that, it needs to zoom in on the eyes and use the Clone Stamp Tool (S) for painting veins and blemishes on the real eyeball. 17. Dodge Eyes We need to Add a Curves Adjustment Layer by clicking Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Curves. Then we will set the blend mode of that layer to “Color Dodge”. Now It becomes easy to fill the mask with black. Now, we will use the Brush Tool (B) and set the opacity of the tool to “10%”. Now you can paint softly over the catch lights in the eyes to improve them. You can also paint on the retina to increase the “roundness” of the eyeball. 18. Adjustment of Vibrance The retinas have a little bit of a blue color cast. Let’s decrease the vibrance of the whites of models eyes by adding a Vibrance Adjustment Layer (Click Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Vibrance). Now we will reduce vibrance to “-50” and then fill the mask with black. We are Using the Brush tool (B) and set it to about “65%” opacity. Then it will become easy to paint into the whites of her eyes to clear away a group of that color. 19. Iris Pop We need to create two new layers and name them “Brighters” and “Darkers”. We will grab the Brush tool (B) and set the tool opacity to “100%”. Here we are using a 2px, hard edged brush and a center color of white. Then we will paint on the “Brighters” layer. Here, we will place little dots of light wherever we see some lightness on the iris. Shut that layer off by selecting the 5/8

  6. little eyeball icon and do the same thing with the “Darkers” layer. However, we will paint with black over dark bits. It is advised to reduce the “Darkers” opacity to “20%” and the “Lighters” opacity to “40%”. 20. Dodge & Burn Skin We flattened much of the highlight or shadow distinction in this picture. Now, this will allow us 6/8

  7. to rebuild shadows and highlights. We have to make a new layer and go Edit>Fill. Here we will choose to fill the layer with “50% Gray”. Now we will Name this layer “D&B-01”. Lastly, we will Set the layer to the blend mode to “Soft Light” to create the grey disappear. 21. Dodge & Burn for Real We will Select the Burn Tool (O). It can be sated to the Range of “Midtones” and Exposure to “25%” up in the top control bar. We are heading to be burning in the shadows first, and then we will play with the highlights. 22. Dodging & Building Highlights We are going to shift to the Dodge tool (O) and set the Range to “Mid-tones” and the main Exposure to “25%” up which is in that top toolbar. 23. Duplicate & Blur Duplicate our D&B layer by hitting Cmd/Ctrl + J and then go Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and choose to give this layer a 50px blur. We need to reduce the opacity of the layer if you think it is too strong. 24. Frequency Separation We are going to make one more frequency separation. Refer to previous in this tutorial if you cannot remember how. Combine all layers to a fresh coat. We had also to add duplicated that layer and named the lower one “lo 3” and the upper one “hi 3”. We want to sharpen the “hi 3” layer by clicking Filter>Sharpen>Smart Sharpen and selecting “175%” amount and a “1.5px:” radius. Now we have to apply a layer mask to this layer and paint with a little black brush. Then set to “10% opacity over the skin to add softness to the skin. 25. Adding Contrast Add a Curves Adjustment Layer by Clicking Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Curves and add a smooth little “S” curve. We will fill the layer mask with black and paint over the face with the 10% opacity brush. This white will remain our center color to add a bit touch of contrast to the face. 26. Color and Grading Make a Selective Color modification in Photo Retouching Layer. Start it by clicking Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Selective Color. You can vary the behavior of the Red channel plus Whites, Midtones, and Blacks as you wish. 7/8
