Science project • Does temperature affect the bounce of a ping-pong ball. • Will the hot ping-pong ball bounce higher or lower. • Will the cold ping-pong ball bounce higher or lower. • Will the room temp. ping-pong ball bounce higher or lower.
The materials Yard stick Ping-pong ball Cold water Hot water
How to do the project Take the ping-pong ball that’s room temp. and drop it from the top of the yard stick and record the bounce of the ball then see if it bounce higher or lower after put the ball in the cold or hot water Ping-pong Measurehow high it bounce. Yard stick Cold water Hot water
Hypothesis • I believe that the higher the temperature the higher the ball will bounce.
Explanation • The reason I did this was that I was just curious about the effect temperature would have on the bounce of the ball.
Summary • In this experiment a ping pong ball was dropped three feet and the height of its bounce was measured. The same ball was the frozen and measured then placed in hot water and then measured.
Background • I found out from previous science classes that gases expand when hot and contract when cold. Therefore, I thought with the expanded air inside the ball would bounce higher.
Experiment • We took the room temp. Ping-Pong ball and drop it and measured the bounce. • We took the hot Ping-Pong ball and drop it and measured the bounce. • We took the cold Ping-Pong ball and drop it and measured the bounce. • We did the room temp, The hot, and the cold Ping-Pong ball each three times.
Discussion and Conclusion • The ping- pong ball that was at room temperature bounced the best. It averaged 22.3 inches. The frozen ping- pong ball averaged 22.3 inches, and the hot ping- pong ball averaged 14 inches.
