  2. Life as a Slave • Work for Slaves was not restricted to Farm Labor, they also were involved in: • Business • Public Works • Government • Slaves could have been treated well or terrible depending on the master, nonetheless it was a rough life that included such things as: • Regular Beatings • Executions • Starvation • Saturnalia was Rome's recognition of the importance of slaves in the empire

  3. Life as a Poor Man/Free Man (Plebeians) • The Largest Group in Rome • It was very challenging to survive as a free man in Rome because of Slaves • Free men grew to resent the Slaves because of the jobs they took from Free men • Many Poor lived off of state welfare • Also the Poor lived right next to the Rich creating a great deal of Resentment

  4. Life as a Rich Man (Patricians) • Early in Roman History were well educated intellectual life style • However as the years went on therich began to live a life of extreme luxury throwing parties that could last days, never working a day in their lives and controlling all the political and financial power

  5. The Problem with all this is? • Rome was intended to be equal, a republic needs some semblance of equality to work • The Masses/Poor had an extreme dislike for the rich and slaves • The Government bankrupted itself paying for the poor • Slave labor is not as efficient as it seems
