  1. sodden – saturated with liquid, especially water; soaked through • Outside, dawn showed us a gray and sodden world. • velocity - the speed of something in a given direction. • The six or seven funnels that touched down didn’t follow tornado rules at all. not for size, direction, or velocity. • chortle – chuckle • Arthur chortled as he zipped his pants up right there in plain sight. • devastated – destroyed; ruined • Smiley could see how our neighborhood had been devastated. • perish – to die or be destroyed through violence • “I’d sure enough have perished if it hadn’t been for you kids.” • lull - a temporary interval of quiet or lack of activity • We heard it next. the lull. the deadliest quiet ever.
