  2. External Recognition of the District’s Language Work • District cited by Commissioner of Official Languages in Parliament • French Language Renewal Project viewed as the National Model of French Renewal • Valued developer of Second Language Curriculum and supporting materials

External Recognition of the District’s Language Work • The district, through the Institute for Innovation in Second Language Education has received the following honour: • Being requested by the Government of Spain to train Spanish teachers in second language pedagogy, • Being invited by the Government of Spain to house the only Associate Cervantes Institute in North America, • Being offered a Spanish Language Resource Centre, donated by the Government of Spain

External Recognition of the District’s Language Work • Invited by the Government of China to train teachers in second language pedagogy • Invited by the Government of China to develop the oral assessment for the Chinese HSK to be acceptable with the European Framework • Invited by CASLT to provide the national lead for the implementation of Canadian language portfolios • Invited to present to the Council of Europe’s Language Assessment Division at Cambridge (ALTE) on our assessment work (April 2008)

  6. Sustainability in Language Programs • Characteristics of Successful Second Language Programs • Supported by strong policy and regulation • Much studied by other jurisdictions • To implement the “Characteristics” supports have been developed.

Developing Fluency: Building Second Language Literacy • Provides researched based second language pedagogy for teachers, recognizing unique approaches for successful second language learning • Provides a range of strategies and familiarization with curriculum • Supports principals with special sessions • Leadership in languages: development of language leaders in schools

International Language Credentialing • EPSB is now North America’s largest approved centre for second language credentialing • The testing program is providing second language education with: • Public confidence that measurable proficiency can be acquired in the school system • The belief that second language proficiency has real social and economic currency • The ability to alter the culture of education in Alberta, making second language acquisition an expectation • This has resulted in significant shifts in enrollment
