    5. Confucius’s Quote Activity Based on these quotes what words would you use to describe Confucius and his beliefs?

    6. Quote 1 “It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.”

    16. Confucius Believed… Social order, harmony, and good government could be restored in China if society were organized around… THE FIVE RELATIONSHIPS

    17. 1: Ruler and Subject Rulers should practice kindness and virtue and in return subjects should be loyal and law abiding

    18. 2: Parent and Child Parents should be loving and children should revere and respect their parents

    19. 3: Husband and Wife Husbands should fulfill their duties and wives should be obedient

    20. 4: Older Sibling and Younger Sibling Elder sibling should be kind and guide the younger sibling while the younger must respect the elder in return

    21. 5: Friend and Friend Friends should be considerate and respectful toward one another

    22. Why the 5 Relationships? These relationships guided people’s interactions in an effort to make the world a better place.

    23. Filial Piety A respect for your parents and ancestors through a deep devotion to your family.

    24. Confucius believed… “If there is righteousness in the heart, there will be beauty in character and there will be harmony in the home. If there be harmony in the home, there will be order in the nation. If there be order in the nation, there will be peace in the world.”

    25. Long Story Short… The Ripple Effect

    26. The Ripple Effect Respect and morality come from your own heart first. From your heart it can spread to your character, then to the home, to the nation and then to the world.

    27. Confucian Principles

    28. Meritocracy Earned Merit trumps Social Status Success and opportunities should be based on ability not money or family.

    29. Writing Activity Ruler and Subject Parent to Child Husband to Wife Older sibling to younger sibling Friend to Friend Rank the significance of these relationships and explain your choices. Choose one relationship and relate it to your experience in the United States…how would life change if this relationship was in place?

    30. Lastly… Are these 5 relationships possible to institute in our society today? How would our lives change? Would the world be better off if the 5 relationships applied?
