  1. BAFT INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE “ The DotCom Evolution - Who will Prevail in the Market” Luiz Castello Branco

  2. DotComs: Reasons for Failure The DotCom Evolution - Who will Prevail in the Market • Lack of Management Skills • Lack of Strategic Vision • Lack of Cost Controls • Lack of Talent • Excess of Business Plans and Lack of Real Businesses • Focus on Fast Flipping Opportunities by Investors and Entrepreneurs “The Internet allows for unbelievably amazing business creation and also for incredibly dumb business creation” -Bill Gross- CEO of Idealab

  3. DotComs: What’s Next? The DotCom Evolution - Who will Prevail in the Market “ The “e” in e-business came to stand for “easy” more than anything else: easy life, easy money, easy business. Now, after the hype, its time to understand that we’ve come to the hard part.” -Lou Gerstner- CEO of IBM • As in any other type of business, it’s important to differentiate simple ideas from real opportunities. This should be done through the use of information and knowledge. Next step involves aligning strategy, processes, resources and people. • Technology is one of the tools to create good companies, not the only one. • Therefore, a bad business will continue to be as bad if it is a digital business

  4. Correcting the Course The DotCom Evolution - Who will Prevail in the Market • Previous Situation: an antagonistic and destructive culture ruled the market • Small and Agile x Big and Slow • “Cannibalize yourself” • New Course of Action • The internet is an instrument of value creation, if used by good and efficiently managed companies. • The end of the “new economy” hype will allow traditional companies to use the internet to transform their business, with the adequate planning and focus.

  5. New Rules for the Game The DotCom Evolution - Who will Prevail in the Market IMPLICATIONS OF THE NEW MOMENT RULES “The golden age for internet deals is gone” There is no easy IPO money left on the table => Create new exit strategies To be the first mover doesn’t guarantee success => Everyone still has a good chance “First movers advantage is finished” “It’s impossible to survive alone” Connections in the “real” world make sense => Stop ignoring the real economy Original ideas continue to be what matters “Explore new markets” Companies that will survive are the one that have a clear and focused strategy for the “P2P” space - Path to Profitability

  6. Financial Investors look for companies... The DotCom Evolution - Who will Prevail in the Market • ... that have identified a clear market opportunity: it may be a pure dotcom exploring a new initiative or a mature company using technology to strengthen its position in the market or to entirely redefine its market; • ... whose entrepreneurs have a strong strategic view about the market and how to successfully develop the business; • ... that have a strong and skilled management, capable of executing the business proposition. Cost controls and day to day management are an important aspect of any company’s life; • ...that have a differentiated technological background and/or a new proprietary technology.

  7. Conclusion The DotCom Evolution - Who will Prevail in the Market • A very important technological aspect: successful companies should have technology platforms which are based on open and scalable systems so that they can continue to be developed and integrated with other platforms and technologies over time. Closed systems can dominate the market for some time but not forever. The fact that IBM is supporting and investing heavily in an open computing environment, based on systems as diverse as Linux, Apache, Java or XML, speaks for itself. • Convergence is also key: systems should integrate wireless, internet and broadband in order to provide for whatever access the user may require. • Global vision, local touch. • Management, Management, Management !!!
