To be information literate is to be able to: • access information efficiently and effectively. • evaluate information critically and competently. • use information accurately and creatively. (As defined in the new American Assoc. of School Librarians standard - V.Harada & A. Tepe)

  7. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library INFORMATION LITERACY • Students learn to locate, organize, evaluate and present material effectively and creatively. “The essential mission of school is (…) changing from providing students with access to information to providing ways of making sense of what would otherwise be an overwhelming amount of information”. -Huntington Lyman

  8. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library INFORMATION LITERACY • Students understand that they are responsible for the information they have collected, that the information is reliable and correct. “Many students believe the material they find on the Internet is correct, simply because it is there.” -J. Hylen

  9. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library And so, what about…. Resource Based Learning? & Cooperative Planning & Teaching? (CPPT)

  10. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library Resource-Based Learning "The role and responsibility of the school library lies in the development of resource-based programs that will ensure that all the young people in our schools have the opportunity to learn the skills that will enable them to become competent users of information " - Canadian School Library Association

  11. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library Resource-Based Learning Resource-Based Learning is: …the achievement of both subject and information literacy objectives through exposure to and practice with diverse resources. (Source: http://library.queensu.ca/webedu/guides/subject/rbl/rblintro.htm) …the instructional strategy where students construct meaning through interaction with a wide range of print, non-print and human resources. (Source:http://www.saskschools.ca/curr_content/bestpractice/resource/index.html)

  12. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library Cooperative Program Planning and Teaching (CPPT)

  13. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library Cooperative Program Planning and Teaching (CPPT) (Yes, we really mean it!) • In high school, it is essential for students to master the processes of accessing and using information so that they can apply these skills after they graduate. • We can work together to develop projects/units to ensure that students use resources in more effective ways. • CPPT allows for a discussion on goals, objectives, information skills, content, unit introduction and conclusion, student groupings, teaching strategies and learning activities.

  14. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library WHY WORK ALONE? • Come and talk to us before you begin planning your unit/assignment/project. • We’d like to ensure we have the resources you need (we may even need to order resources!). • We will need to organize resources prior to your visit. • We will need to book the library for your visit. • We can teach and supervise the students together! Let’s share the workload!

  15. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library You really don’t have to work alone! • We can learn from each other – creative learning activities and teaching strategies, evaluation and assessment practices. • Students can receive more individual attention with two or more professionals working with the group.

  16. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library What the experts are saying! “Collaboration between teacher and teacher-librarian leads to student achievement”. -Jan Hylen “Academic achievement is higher in schools where the teacher-librarian engages with classroom teachers to collaboratively plan and teach curriculum programs, which integrate information literacy skills.” -Carol Koechlin

  17. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library Let’s talk about PLAGIARISM! “Prevention, not detection, is the best way to reduce plagiarism”. “In this Information Age, accessing information and culling out the significant material is a necessary skill to be learned”. -Michael P. Freedman

  18. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library What people are saying about PLAGIARISM… “The higher the level of student engagement and creativity, the lower the probability of plagiarism”. - Doug Johnson “The schools that are most successful in preventing or limiting student plagiarism are those that place as much importance on the process as on the product”. -Mary Ellen Scribner

  19. Prince of Wales Secondary School Library Avoiding Plagiarism: How we can help • We can help with “front-loading” information sessions on how to avoid plagiarism. • We can offer support throughout the process. • We are an extra pair of eyes. • We’ll mark your Works Cited for you. • We have know-how experience!
