Nordonia High School Grade 8 Scheduling Activities Calendar 2012-2013 ActivityTime Line • Middle school teachers recommend and initial approval of course December 17- selections in English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language. January 18 • All students will attend a Scheduling Orientation Program to receive January 25 registration materials at NMS. • Students and parents review the Program of Studies Booklet and plan January 25- appropriate course of study. February 5 January 31 • Activities and Academics Fair (NHS Small Gym) 6:00 p.m Parent/Student Scheduling Orientation (NHS Auditorium) 7:00 p.m • Students submit completed forms (scheduling worksheet, four year February 6 plan, online scheduling form) in the green packet, to middle school. • Completed schedules are collected and students will complete online February 8 scheduling at the middle school. • High School Counselor will conduct student/parent conferences by March 1 – 30 appointment if needed. Questions and concerns can be addressed by calling the High School Guidance Office at 330.468.4603

  6. Your Future Starts Now! • This is a chance for a fresh start. • Grades and attendance earned in the 9th grade impact your GPA , admission to college, and possibly CVCC admission. • GPA=Total of Quality Points divided by credit attempted.

  7. Your Freshman Year is Pivotal! • Personal Responsibility increases. Teachers are willing to work with you, but not FOR you. Student, teacher, and parent communication is very important. • Attendance is crucial. You cannot learn if you are not in class participating. It is easier to keep up with the work rather than to catch up to the work.

  8. Class Placement Students are promoted to grade levels based on the number of credits they accumulate per year. Grade 10 SOPHOMORE 4.5 Credits Grade 11 JUNIOR 9.50 Credits Grade 12 SENIOR 14.0 Credits

Things to Consider for Scheduling • What do you need to graduate? • What are your plans after high school? • Are you going to attend CVCC? • What are your interests? • Talk to your parents and teachers. • What is your past school performance? • Are you working towards an honors diploma?(pg. 7 in Program Booklet)

Changes to Honors Courses for the Class of 2017 • Honors level courses will now receive a weighted grade. • Honors courses will receive 0.5 weight toward the GPA (4.5 points for an “A”, 3.5 points for a “B”, etc). • Ninth grade honors courses • 1530 Honors English • 2210 Honors Geometry/2115 Honors Algebra II • 3110 Honors Biology • 4110 Honors World History • 5115 Honors French I/5155 Honors Spanish I

  11. PROCEDURES FOR COMPLETING COURSE SELECTION WORKSHEET FOR GRADE 9, 2013-2014 Complete name and telephone information. Circle the course number in each required academic area as well as elective courses. NOTE: Freshmen must take the following academic credits: 1 Credit in English 1 Credit in Mathematics 1 Credit in Science 1 Credit in Social Studies ½ Credit in Health ¼ Credit in Physical Education 1 Elective Credit 1 Study Hall (or additional elective upon high school counselor approval.) 3. Please refer to the Teacher Recommendation Form when making academic course selections. 4. Student and parent MUST sign Academic Scheduling Worksheet. 5. All students must be registered for 6 classes EACH semester. 6. Schedules may be changed by contacting the High School Guidance Office BEFORE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL. SCHEDULE CHANGES AFTER THE START OF THE SCHOOL ARE NOT PERMITTED. 7. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your high school counselor at 330.468.4603. ATHLETIC ELIGIBILITY NOTE: Students must be passing five courses each semester. Physical Education credit does not apply toward eligibility. Please be aware of your grades in order to stay eligible to participate in athletic programs!

  21. NHS ATHLETICS All student athletes must meet eligibility requirements set forth by the State of Ohio and adhere to the Nordonia H.S. Code of Conduct. Questions regarding rules and policies can be found in the Athletic Handbook. **Athletic Contests are held during Winter and Spring breaks and students are expected to be there. Fundraising for athletics is done through Athletic Boosters Club. Fall Sports Cheerleading F,JV,V Brenda Basch Try-outs are in June. Teams practice during summer and after school for football and basketball squads. May attend cheering competitions. Squad attends all games for their sport. Cross Country Coed Mike Martin Practices start in August. Team practices 6 am and after school. Season runs August thru October. Schedule TBA. Summary • Choosing classes for next year should be a thoughtful process and requires careful planning and communication.This will enable you to achieve to the best of your ability. • Students should challenge themselves academically now to better prepare for their future. • It is also important, however, to consider time and effort you are willing to put towards courses selected.
