  2. Types of Songs • Many people during this time expressed their love for America through patriotic songs. • When someone is patriotic it means that he or she loves his or her country.

  3. Patriotic Songs You May Have Heard • The Star Spangled Banner • Yankee Doodle • Hurrah! Hurrah! • Hail to the Chief! • My Country 'tis of Thee

  4. Why did they listen to and sing to this music? • Composers and song writers were trying to express how they felt about wars and battles • Some of the songs were used to tell stories about what happened in battles • Some songs were used for celebration • Mostly, the songs were written to remind people of the soldiers that were fighting for our country and our freedom

  6. Drums • Drums were a major part of military bands at this time • There was usually a bass drum and a snare drum • The snare drums were made out of an animals head and rawhide and had a wooden shell

  7. Cymbals • Cymbals were much smaller than they are today • Most of the cymbals had wooden or leather handles so that they were easy to hold

Let’s think! • How is music now different from what music was like then? • Do we have more instruments to play music compared to what they had back then? • What do singers sing about in their songs now compared to what they used to sing about then? • What does our music have in common with music in the past?

Other types of Music • We have talked mostly about patriotic music • Research on your own or with a partner to find other types of music from the period • Who wrote the songs? • What were the songs about? • Did the songs send special messages or tell stories? • What types of instruments were used to play the music in the songs?
