  1. ESS Active Cells Current status of the Active Cells Fire Suppression System • 14th ITSF hosted by European Spallation Source ERIC (ESS) in Lund, Sweden Commercial

  2. About • Not a fire expert! • Involved in/Led; • New build Engineering substantiation • Include fire barriers Class 2/3 SSC • Piping design • Fuel manufacture Commercial

  3. Overview • Active Cells • Standards • Strategy / Discussion points • Way forward Commercial

  4. EI60 Fire Boundary Compartment Volume Ceiling UKAEA/ESS. Commercial

  5. Characteristics • Industrial machinery room -> Contains milling machine etc • Storage warehouse - > Large room, high ceiling, Pits • Normally unoccupied by personnel • Occupied by machinery UKAEA/ESS. Commercial

  6. Standards • PS ISO TR 16732 Fire Risk Assessment • EN 14972-1 (DRAFT) BS EN 14972. Fixed firefighting systems. Water mist systems. Part 1. Design, installation, inspection and maintenance • BS 8489 Fixed fire protection systems – Industrial and commercial watermist systems -> non harmonised standard • prEN 12259-9 – Deluge Valves -> non harmonised standard -> cannot be used for CE marking • EN 12845 – Pumps /pump set -> non harmonised standard -> cannot be used for CE marking • ISO 6182-11 Pipe supports Commercial

  7. EN 14972-1 (DRAFT) BS EN 14972. There is a market but less developed than the sprinkler market Language not clear! BUT intent suggest a delay or inhibit is forbidden Hot cell. Waste effluent post operation. Loss of capability Hot cell. Unique character Extract: EN 14972-1 (DRAFT) BS EN 14972. Commercial

  8. BS 8489 Fixed fire protection systems (UK) Extract: BS 8489 Fixed fire protection systems. Commercial

  9. Discussion Points • Hot Cell is unique • Requires collaborative approach • Standards • Economical & proportionate to the hazard Commercial

  10. Duration Market engagement – Ongoing. Suggest scaling possible but until quote stage -> difficult to determine if market can generate a solution with minimum testing BS 8489 Fixed fire protection systems – Industrial and commercial watermist systems -> non harmonised standard Commercial

  11. Self contained or Pumped • Water mist systems connected to a public water main • Maintain inlet flow and pressure • Fault could lead to flooding • Self-contained systems • No connection to mains • Require large tanks • Susceptible to algae/organic growth Commercial

  12. Nozzles • CAP material tends to degrade in RA environments • No CAP • Justification • Maintenance – not possible wit RHS GW Sprinkler nozzle head Commercial

  13. Detection systems • Mount outside of cell • Pre-select equipment for in-cell (thermocouple?) • Fibre optic cables? -> May not be suitable?? Leave to manufacturer  Suggest technologies Reliability Maintenance Cost Commercial

  14. Typical components Commercial

  15. Duration Commercial

  16. Potential specification • Use BS8489 where possible and diverge where instructed by ESS. • Pumped system with buffer tanks • Extinguish either PC or AC – Not both at the same time • Add delay timer • Dry system • Use mains water • Stainless steel pipework & use COTS hangers Commercial

  17. Commercial

  18. Commercial

  19. Way forward • Agree approach with ESS • CDR • Procurement • Design, Manufacture, Install Commercial
