  2. “Total” Social Institutions Characteristics • All aspects of daily life is planned without resident input • Institution is totally isolated from outside world Goal • The goal of total institutions is re-socialization • To radically alter residents personalities through manipulation of their environment

  3. “Total” Institutions Task • In groups of 4: • You will receive the name of an institution • Your task is to explain how your institution could become a total institution • Be sure to include: • What characteristics of total institutions could occur in your institution? • How could your institution become a total institution? • How could your institution alter clients/residents personalities through deliberate manipulation of their environment

  5. Criminal Justice Systems Formal versus Informal Systems

  6. In Canada • We use a formal system – multiple components, highly structured • 3 components: law enforcement, courts, and correctional agencies/institutions

  7. Law Enforcement • Considered the “front line” of the system; run by different levels of government • Goals: protect society, prevent crime; apprehend and arrest criminals

  8. Courts • We use an adversarial system: the defense and prosecution “compete” to “win” the case • Lawyers can be appointed if a defendant can’t afford one – ensures everyone receives a fair trial

  19. Informal Systems – Aboriginal • These systems seek to heal the person who committed the offense, and reintegrate them back into society; they also strive to correct the conditions that led to the offense

  20. Informal Systems – Kpelle of Africa • Has a formal & informal branch (moot) • Handles: assault, possession of illegal arms, theft (between unrelated individuals) • Kpelle moot – informal airing of a dispute before an assembled group – mediated by a person (kinsman) chosen by the complainant

Homework • Read page 157-161 • Define the first 6 key concepts: • (adversarial, retribution, deterrence, specific deterrence, general deterrence, rehabilitation) • Read the Power of the Police pages 162-163 and answer the following • According to the study mentioned on page 162 of your textbook, what are the 6 factors that influence the actions of the police? • How do these findings compare with Canadian police behavior according to provincial task forces. Reference specific statistics. • Do you think there is systematic racism in law enforcement agencies? Why?
