What is swine influenza?
  • A respiratory disease caused by a type of influenza virus
  • Human cases of the swine influenza (swine flu) have been identified in Mexico, Canada, Europe, New Zealand, and the US
how does someone catch swine influenza
How does someone catch swine influenza?
  • The swine flu is spread the same way as the seasonal flu:
    • Through the air when someone with swine influenza coughs or sneezes
    • Touching something with the flu virus on it and then touching your mouth or nose
  • Swine influenza may also be caused by contact with infected pigs

What are the symptoms of swine influenza?
  • Fever greater than 100 F
  • Sore throat
  • Cough
  • Stuffy Nose
  • Chills
  • Headache and body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Diarrhea and vomiting

What should I do if I have symptoms?
  • As you would do normally, call your health care provider if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms
  • If you get sick with influenza, stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them

How can I protect myself from getting sick?
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands with soap and water often, especially after you cough or sneeze
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick
