  2. NAMES OF THE REVELATION • Al-Qur’an = “the Recitation” • Al-Kitab = “the Book” • Dhikr = “Remembrance, admonition” • Al-Furqan = “the Differntiating [truth]” • Al-Tanzil = “the Revealed” • Mathani = “Oft-repeated”

  3. QUR’ANIC TECHNICAL TERMS • AYAH, plural AYAT = literally, “sign, proof, evidence”; technically, “verse of the Qur’an” • SURAH = lit.“wall surrounding a city”; tech. “chapter of the Qur’an • JUZ’ = “part” one of the 30 parts in which the text is divided

  4. 114 SURAHS OF THE QUR’AN • Each surah has basmalah = “In the name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate”, except for Surah # 9, entitled “Tauba” = Repentance • Al-Fatiha = “The Opening” is the first surah, that begins with basmalah and is followed by hamdalah = “Praise belongs to God.”

  5. HISTORY OF THE TEXT • The Art of Writing – Orthography in pre-Islamic Arabia not well-developed, although writing was prevalent. • “God taught the use of pen.” (96:4) • Collection of the Qur’an during the Prophet’s time – the role of scribes

  6. THE MECCAN SECTIONS • Style: short, rhymed prose (Arabic favorable to the production of rhymed forms) • Maxims introduced by “Say” (qul) • Soothsayer’s utterances • Oaths and “when” passages • Dramatic, homiletic in order to impress the conscience and clinch an argument

  7. THE MEDINAN SECTIONS • Narratives and parables • Long verses with ritual and legal prescriptions • Liturgy and faith • Social and political matters introduced in the prophetic narratives • The challenge to think and reflect over rather than “close” the text

  8. DOCTRINES OF THE QUR’AN • On human being, humanity, guidance • On Oneness of God, the Creator, the Nurturer, the Compassionate, the Forgiving • On society and prophets • On human dignity and religious pluralism • On male-female relations • On human relationships
