  1. Horace’s Odes

  2. Horace’s Odes • a collection in four books of Latin lyric poems • Lyric: a short poem with one speaker (not necessarily the poet) who expresses thought and feeling; in classical Greece, the lyric was written to be sung • Ode: lyric poem of moderate length, with a serious subject, an elevated style, and an elaborate stanza pattern; often praises people, the arts of music and poetry, natural scenes, or abstract concepts

  3. Horace’s Odes • Horace is considered the master of Latin lyric poetry • Horace’s genius lay in applying the form of older Greek lyricists to the social life of Rome in the age of Augustus • earliest positively dated poem in the collection is I.37 an ode on the defeat of Cleopatra written in 30 B.C.

  4. Horace’s Odes • most famous of Horace's odes uses agricultural metaphors to urge us to embrace the pleasures available in everyday life instead of relying on remote aspirations for the future • most famous line: • Carpe diem quam minimum credulapostero • "Seize the Day, putting as little trust as possible in the future" • Carpe diem: “Seize the day” (literally “pluck the day”)
