  2. Read the questions with Ideas, then read through your draft and decide whether you can check it off, or should you add, delete, or reorganize some details? Do so slowly and thoroughly for each different trait.

  6. Semicolons are used to … • Join together two independent sentences. • Example: • I have a signed Batman comic. It is the most valuable comic I own. • You can use a semicolon to join those two sentences together to form a larger sentence. • I have a signed Batman comic; it is the most valuable comic I own.

  7. More examples • Miss Marple is a great detective. She has solved hundreds of crimes.   8. WARNING • When using a semicolon to join together two independent sentences, you must make sure that the sentences relate to each other and have some common bond or idea. • Examples of what not to do • I have a lovely bunch of coconuts; Barack Obama is our president. • Grape jelly is delicious; who scared the cat? • The cheese is spoiled; Mary has odd tastes in hats.

Semicolons are used to … • Join together two independent thoughts that are connected by a conjunctive adverb (or “joining word”) • Example: My karate instructor was tough however, he never got upset. • You can use a semicolon to join those two sentences together to form a larger sentence. • Example: My karate instructor was tough; however, he never got upset.

Semicolons are used to … • Help to better separate groups of words that already have commas. • Example: My favorite foods are pizza with pepperoni, peppers, and mushrooms, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, and liver and onions. • Use a semicolon to replace where you would normally put commas to separate the ideas or word groups. • Example: My favorite foods are pizza with pepperoni, peppers, and mushrooms; peanut butter and jelly sandwiches; and liver and onions.
