  3. TODAY (Cornell Note Format) • Reminders Upper right hand corner heading!! • Objective: DFMSSWBAT explain what a good summary looks like. • Topic: Writing a good summary • EQ: Why do I need to know how to write a good summary?

  4. What is a Summary? • A summary is a brief statement or account of something; It is an abbreviated version of text. • The purpose of being able to write good summary is for you to be able to interact with the information in a new way.

  5. Writing an Exemplar Summary • In order to to write and exemplar summary, you need to know three things about the text: • what are the main ideas in the text • what kind of text are you reading • how the text is organized

  6. Your Exemplar Summary…. (CFS) • Your Exemplar summary should include these 5 things • A shorten version of the original text • Only important information • Only what is in the passage (text evidence) • The writers own words • Be well-written; correct spelling, grammar and full sentences. Etc

  7. Lets Practice • Pull out homework and a separate sheet of paper… • Using 1-4 • 1- Not Met (Needs some work) • 2 Approaching (Almost) • 3 Met (I got it just need some tweaking) • 4-Exceeds (I got it no help needed) • Rate your summary

  8. New sheet of paper! • Using your rubric and your notes re-write your summary from last night!!! • Switch with a partner; your partner is going to grade your re-written summary using the notes that we just took and the rubric!!

  9. Homework • Pick 1 summary from your reading Log 1-Write the original summary 2-rewrite the same summary using the things we learned today in class!!
