  4. 2) Describe life in Europe during the Middle Ages. • After Rome fell, Europe entered the “Dark Ages,” the first 600 years of the Middle Ages. • Warfare

  5. 3) Explain the changes that the Renaissance brought to Europe. • Learning art, and all that was Classical. • Humanism • Present and human accomplishments • Three dimensional art • Life like sculptures • Names such as Michelangelo, da Vinci, Shakespeare • “Age of Exploration”

  6. 4) Explain the causes and effects of the French and Industrial Revolutions. • French kings lived lavishly while many of their subjects starved. • Changes of King Louis XVI (16) • Napoleon Bonaparte rose to become dictator. • Stabilized the government and economy but failed in his attempt to take over Europe and Russia. • Industrial Revolution began in England and brought changes to Europe and the world • Inventions • Jobs • Growing cities

  7. 5) Explain how the growth of empires in the 1800’s and early 1900’s created an atmosphere of intense competition in the world. • Industrial revolution brought increased trade and wealth but industrialized nations wanted more. • Raw materials and markets • Age of Imperialism • 1900’s Germany was added to the mix. • Unified in 1862, Germany immediately built up a massive military to gain an empire of its own.

  8. 6) Briefly explain the causes and some significant events of World War I. • WWI- caused by imperialism, massive military build-up, and formation of alliances. • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary. • Austria-Hungary in an alliance with Germany and Turkey was enraged and declared war on Serbia. • WWI- 1914-1918

  9. 7) Explain the reasons for Hitler’s rise to power and his defeat in WWII. • WWII began in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. • Hitler-dictator of Germany • Germany could not maintain its advantage in the war and fund the Holocaust, partially after the powerful and technologically advanced U.S. entered the war. • Germany lost several key battles in the S.U. and North Africa. • Lost D-Day, the Allied invasion of the European mainland on June 6, 1944. • Germans surrendered.

  10. 8) Describe the Cold War and how it affected Europe. • Tension • Competition between free countries of the West and communist countries led by the Soviet Union. • Soviet troops “liberated” Eastern Europe but at the end of the war set up communist governments throughout Eastern Europe. • 1945-1990, free and communist countries fiercely competed with weapons, space exploration, technology, education, etc. • Berlin Wall until 1989
