  2. Objective • SWBAT identify and discuss the trends that women took in the 1920’s, and what was the driving cause behind why women started to act differently during this era

  3. Women and the 1920’s • During the 1920’s, women saw their social role change • Women, who were supposed to be subdued, were now becoming more rebellious against the norm • What could have caused this “rebellion” to occur? Answer: The increased role of women in the workforce during the war and the passing of the 19th amendment– left women wanting more equality.

  4. How women changed • The “Flapper” Movement • Women began wearing dresses shorter • By 1927: Dresses reach knee length or higher • Cut their hair short • Wear close fitted hats • Wear heavy makeup • Women smoke and drink more • 1918-1928: Number of cigarettes produced in the United States doubles

  5. Women and their new roles • During this period, the women start to work more • 15% of women held professional positions 20% held clerical positions • Mostly single women worked • About 1/3 of working women were married In the 1920’s do you think prejudice was still practiced against women in the workplace?

Women and Politics • 19th Amendment: Gives women the right to vote • However, not many women exercised the right to vote due to “lack of interest” • Also, women failed to gain reform in other areas • Amendment to end child labor failed to get passed • Equal rights amendment failed to get passed

  7. Women and Politics • Women gained seats in the political arena • Jeannette Rankin: First woman to win seat in House of Representatives • Miriam A. Ferguson and Nellie Tayloe Ross • Became the Governors of Texas and Wyoming • By 1928, there were 145 women in 38 state legislatures What is the importance of these political gains?
