  1. Energy Crisis! Mobilizing a global movement toward Health, Happiness & Well Being Inspired by The Happy Planet Index 2.0 Why good lives don’t have to cost the Earth

  2. Cross Roads… • In the final year of the first decade of the third millennium, humanity stands at a crossroads. Depending on the choices we make now, future generations will either look back at our time with anger or with gratitude. • Currently, we are set on the former course. If we continue our reckless over-consumption of resources and destruction of the environment, driven by an insatiable appetite for economic growth, our descendants will face a world of scarcity, uncertainty and conflict. • Not surprisingly, global reality in many cases, mirrors a personal reality, where our careless over-expenditure and mis-management of personal energy inevitably lead to “emissions” (toxic outputs) and “exhaust” (debilitating stress and burnout)

  3. A New Pandemic is Sweeping Across the Planet • Looking back: The second half of the twentieth century was defined by the pursuit of economic growth and material goods to serve the current generation (material aspirations) • Looking Forward: The twenty-first century will be defined by the pursuit of healthy, happy and ecologically-conscious lives to serve both current and future generations ( energetic aspirations)

  4. Sadly, neither the dominant economic paradigm, nor the dominant health paradigm of the last 30 years has been the “solution set” we’re seeking… Both Mother Earth (Climate Change) & Father Profit (Economic Meltdown) at the Macro and Micro levels are saying, “No MAS!”

  5. Alternative Visions of Progress • Over the last 60-odd years, we have focused on a few strategies, specifically technology, healthcare, employment, and above all the economy – defined very narrowly in terms such as GDP – so as to provide for economic well-being. • We have tended to pay less attention to some other strategies such as values, leisure time and social capital.

  6. The Power of Story • In an age of uncertainty, society- globally needs a new compass • But how does one measure well-being? • The “happy” debate has moved from philosophy to the realm of science, with a growing body of research identifying what it means to be happy, what drives it and how to measure it

  7. The Power of Story • Tapping the Power of the World’s New Story-where the Greatest Happiness is more Enriching than the Greatest Wealth • People are questioning what is Really Valuable in Life • They need A New Vision of Progress with New Tools to Achieve it • Which include Mastering the Fundamentals of Personal and Organizational Transformation • And Addressing the Tendency towards Complexity

  8. The Simplicity beyond the Complexity • Buddhists say that wise people are able to understand the complexity of an issue, but only the wisest are able to go beyond that complexity and find the simplicity at the other side. • Its time for each of us to provide the way beyond, applying energy to that which truly matters…

  9. Have you Built the Energy Systems for Well Being? • Aside from feeling ‘good’, energetics incorporates a sense of individual vitality, maximize opportunities to undertake meaningful, engaging activities which confer feelings of competence and autonomy, and augment the possession of a stock of inner resources that helps one cope when things go wrong • Well-being is also about feelings of relatedness to other people – both in terms of close relationships with friends and family, and belonging to a wider community

  10. Imagine Tapping all the Energy you Need to: • Experience Individual Vitality (Personal Energy & Engagement Multipliers) • Actualize Opportunities to Engage in Meaningful Work that Truly Matters • Cultivate the Inner Resilience to Forge Ahead even when Things Go Wrong • Participate/Activate your Community of Like-Spirited People that have the Time and Inclination to Support Each Other

  11. Focusing on what Truly Matters • Applying an economist orientation (they love efficiency) it is clear that most personal energy systems are both arcane and inefficient. • We must literally retrofit or remodel our energy system for the “Ultimate Efficiency Ratios”, eliminating waste-defined as the use of energy that doesn’t improve the quality of life and turn us into the Ultimate Energy Machines (with heart)

  12. What gets Measured gets DoneWhat gets Rewarded stays Done Personal and Organizational Transformation

  13. Measurement Matters: The power of indicators Three reasons for getting indicators right • Validity: If an indicator is not measuring what it claims to measure, societies may be fooled into thinking they are faring better (or worse) than they really are. • Perverse incentives: When the success of an organization or society is judged on the basis of a particular indicator, it can skew the pursuit of improvement towards enhancing that indicator- above all other considerations. • Defining progress: Perhaps most subtly, major indicators such as GDP define our very sense of what constitutes progress (but do they really?)

  14. Delivering the Promise • How can we serve as the wellbeing vector to inoculate our community and the planet with the energy for real and sustainable well being? • Inspiring and Demonstrating the Impact of Real Well Being

  15. Energy = Subjective Well Being It is time to write a new narrative of progress that is required for the 21st century including: • It is possible to have a happy, vital & energetic life • Over-extension represents one of the key barriers to sustainable well-being. We can develop new energy models, rituals and systems to achieve the energy we need • Measuring individual and community well-being in a consistent and regular way, and understanding the inter-relationship between the two, enhances sustainable well-being Note: We must make the conscious effort to measure those fundamentals which are challenging to measure-such as energy and well-being, not just measuring what comes easily

  16. The Power of Intention “The future is not the result of choices among alternative paths offered by the present, but a place that is created – created first in the mind and will, and created next in activity. The future is not some place we are going to, but one we are creating. The paths are not to be found, but made, and the activity of making them changes both the maker and the destination.” --John Scharr

  17. Positive Vibration • Positive emotions  Tend to provide positive feedback Enabling people to flourish  Building resilience to future challenges Creating additional Positive Emotions -- Positivity, by Professor Barbara Frederickson

  18. Power Question If you had the energy for it, what would you change in your own personal life that would mean you get more of what you really think makes your life great and may, at the same time, help others?

  19. Energetics as an EcosystemNo Man is An Island • Island Fever • The “Easter Island” Metaphor (seen notes section below) • Truth is…Planet Earth is also an Island • Just that the next island is millions of miles away • Harmonizing with other Like-Spirited people creates huge Synergy & Leverage • They need the framework and tools to help…

  20. What is the Footprint we are leaving? • "My precious child, I never left you during your time of trial. Where you see only one set of footprints, I was carrying you." • Take only pictures, steal only time, leave only footprints. ... What is the mark/legacy/footprint you want to leave?

  21. The Energy Economics of Wellness & Prevention • An Educational Component • Evangelizing the Energy Movement/Cause • An Application Component • Online/Blending Learning: new tools to help • A Passion/Purpose Component • The core of Energetics: A new vision of progress • A Social/Community Engagement and Enrichment Component • Happiness Community Centers (real and virtual)

  22. Can I help you and can you help memobilize an Energy Movement? Thanks for reading & responding!
