  2. The Dutch Delta in NW Europe The Netherlands is shaped by the alluvial deposits of Rhine, Meuse, Scheldt and Eems rivers. The Belgium and central Holland coasts are shaped by the pre-Holocene alluvial deposits of the Rhine, Meuse, Scheldt rivers by marine reworking. Delta Programme Commissioner

The Delta Committee (2007-2008) The mandate The Netherlands government asked the Delta Committee to come up with recommendations on how to protect the Netherlands against the consequences of climate change on the short and the very long term. The Committee’s integrated vision embraced interactions with life and work, agriculture, nature, recreation, landscape, infrastructure and energy. Delta Programme Commissioner

Summary of Delta Committee report Twelve recommendations for the future The Delta Committee has developed an integrated vision for the future extending to 2100, and formulated 12 recommendations for the short and medium term. Scientific basis The Delta Committee sought scientific advice on a number of aspects, from a group of national and international experts. The mission is urgent The Netherlands must accelerate its efforts because the climate is changing rapidly and the economic, societal and physical stakes are high. Delta Programme Commissioner

Present – 2015: ongoing implementation Ongoing programmes under the DP: • Flood Protection Programme / Weak Links in Coast • Organising safety on the basis of dune/dyke inspections • Room for the River / Meuse Projects • 90 projects along the river tributaries At the same time looking further ahead: • Preparing Delta Decisions Delta Programme Commissioner

After 2015: further developing and implementing Delta Works of the Future In search for innovative solutions • Building safety using nature (Rotterdam Port Extension and the Sand Engine, already under implementation) • Flood and drought early warning and monitoring dyke strength (remote sensing and in situ sensing sensors) • Smart solutions to separate fresh and salt water Delta Programme Commissioner
