  2. Foreign Dynasty • -Manchuria took over in 1644 • -Kept Confucian ideas • - second time a foreign power conquered China and set up a dynasty

  3. Beginning of the Qing Dynasty • - Officially started: 1644 • Good starts: • -Low taxes • - Rewarding land-cultivation • - Much peace and prosperity • - National strength increased • - Social order became more equitable

  4. Early problems • Isolationism: • - caused restricted trade with foreign countries • - China was left out of the first industrial revolution • -failed to modernize with the rest of the world

  5. Important Leaders • Emperor Taizu-founded Latter regime, later becoming the Qing regime (1616) • Emperor Taizhong-first emperor of the Qing Dynasty. (1626-1643) • Emperor Shunzhi-defeated Ming Dynasty (1643-1661) • Emperor Yongzhen-maintained peace (1722-1735) • Emperor Daoguang-Opium war outbreak(1820-1840) • Emperor Xianfeng-Qing dynasty declined, Taiping Rebellion.(1850-1861) • Emperor Xuatang-last emperor of Qing Dynasty(1908-1911)

  7. Accomplishments • Conquered- the Balkhash Lake and Serbia in the northwest, the Stanovoy Range and Sakhalin Island in the northeast, Taiwan, and other small islands in the southeast. • Wrote- Many famous Chinese novels written during this dynasty

  9. Opium War • Causes: • - The British illegally exported opium to China • - Addicted citizens • Effects: • - Unfair treaties were signed, opening more trading ports in China.

  10. Decline • - The Qing dynasty began to decline in the mid to late 1800s • - It officially ended in 1911 • - It was the last of the Chinese Dynasties
