  4. What is the Association of Psychology Students? • Student organization open for membership to any student interested in psychology • Members can be a major or minor of any discipline • Credits in psychology are not required APS IS OPEN TO MEMBERSHIP FOR EVERYONE!

  5. What is Psi Chi? • Purpose StatementPsi Chi is an international honor society whose purpose shall be to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in scholarship of the individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology. • Mission StatementThe mission of Psi Chi is to produce a well-educated, ethical, and socially responsible member committed to contributing to the science and profession of psychology and to society in general.

  6. Requirements for Psi Chi: • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0 • Psychology GPA of 3.0 • Declared psychology major or minor • Completion of at least 3 semesters of college (at least 1 of which must have been at ODU) • Completion of at least 9 credit hours of psychology

What Do We Do? • Hold general member meetings • 1st and 3rd Thursday during activity hour • Host speakers in various fields of psychology • Invite faculty to discuss departmental programs to help members • Hold social events • Participate in various fundraising and community service activities • Attend the SEPA convention annually • Hold an induction ceremony for members

  8. Why Should You Join? • Boost your resume • Network • Faculty • Students with similar interests • Grant/scholarship opportunities

Joining is Easy! • Fill out an application for membership • Psi Chi prospective members: attach a copy of your DegreeWorks for GPA verification purposes • Renewal (for current members): Submit a new application • Pay dues • APS: $35 per calendar year • Psi Chi: $80 for first year • Renewal fees: $35 per year for each organization • Turn in application and dues • Psi Chi/APS officer- MGB 132C during our office hours • Psi Chi/APS mailbox- MGB 250 • MGB 246

  10. Deadline for Applications The deadline for all fall membership applications is: OCTOBER 20th There will be no exceptions for late applications or dues. If you miss the deadline, you will not be admitted membership until spring 2012.

  11. Point System • To be considered an ACTIVE member: • Meeting Attendance • 4 out of 6 per semester • Community Service • 10 hours per semester • Fundraising • $25 per semester • Add yourself to the co-curricular transcript Why is it important to become an ACTIVE member?

Fall Meeting Schedule • September 15: Welcome Meeting • October 6: Dr. Paulsen, Old Dominion University • Discussing research • October 20: SEPA Informational Meeting • November 3: Dr. Bliss, Old Dominion University • Discussing I/O Psychology • November 17: TBA • December 1: Final meeting of the semester

  13. Community Service- 10 Hours • September 24: 12-3pm, American Heart Association Heart Walk at Mt. Autism Society Volunteer Events • September 24th: Autism Awareness Carwash, 7 Eleven, 225 Hanbury Road Chesapeake, VA, 9am to 2pm • Volunteers are asked to show up no later than 8:15 a.m. • October 8th, 15th, 22nd : Ongoing SibART Sessions, Autism Society Location Norfolk, VA, 10amto 12pm- The Autism Society works collaboratively with SibART, a therapeutic art program designed for children with Autism and their siblings. • SibART director, Angela Sadsad and volunteers will assist the kids with creating some more substantive work using approx 3 workshops to work on a single project. Autism Society Volunteer Events • October 15th: 3rd Annual Autism Summit, Double Tree Hotel in Virginia Beach • Set-up/breakdown, door greeters, helping at the Autism Society display table, opportunity to interact with the families affected directly by Autism • The following shifts are available: 9am to 1pm & 1pm to 5pm. If  you are unable to do a full shift and you are still interesting in participating please let us know your availability. • October 29th: 1st Annual Autism Bootacular Fall Social, Autism Society Location, Norfolk, VA 4pm-6pm – This social will include trick or treating games, and activities for the kids 14 and under on the first floor and a social gathering on the second floor with the individuals 15 and up.  • Volunteers arrive no later than 3pm and to hang around until about 6:30-6:45pm to help clean things up. • Set-up/breakdown,  greeters, passing candy out, games, socialize with individuals 15 and up, etc.  • Email: tidewaterasa@verizon.net, Call 757-461-4474, or check out our Volunteer Up!   16. Homecoming 2011 Do you want to get a head start on required service hours before schoolwork picks up TOO much? Do you want to get to know other members?

  17. Homecoming Float • Homecoming Parade: Saturday, October 15th - 11am • For every hour you spend building/ decorating the float, you earn a service hour for Psi Chi/APS requirement • Great way to get to know other members!

  18. Interested? • Come fill out the availability sheet to join the Committee! • Building Experience, Special Effects Skills, Artistic Background….or if you just want to help out  • Know anyone who can lend a trailer or wagon flatbed? Have a space we can store the float? • Other Homecoming activities TBA

Fundraising- $25 per semester • Fall 2011 • Yankee Candle- we receive 40% of the money! • October 2nd- November 3rd • Holiday themed, orders will be fulfilled in time for Christmas • Raffle- tickets are $1 • November 3rd- 30thth, takes place on December 1st • Community service events • Spring 2012 • Relay for Life

Sell 10 T-Shirts, Get Yours FREE! • All money and forms are due to the Psi Chi/APS office, MGB 132C, no later than September 30, 2011 at 3pm- anything received after this deadline will be refunded to purchasers. • If you sign out a packet, you must return a packet (even if you didn’t sell any shirts). • If you sell 10 t-shirts, you will receive one shirt of your choice free. In the 11th space on your order form, put your name and an asterisk (*) beside it to denote that this will be your free t-shirt. • If you fill up your first order form and would like to sell 10 more shirts for a second free shirt, you will need to return the first order form and all money for those orders.
