  7. Recent Steering Committee Activities • Gossamer PC is investigating transitioning to a TC • Active community since 1999 with 13 forums held at the SDM • Gossamer has become too narrow of a term to describe their focus • To achieve continuity and better organization the PC has adopted a TC-like structure • “Technical challenges of space structures are unique and enduring within the space community and need a stronger voice” • Discussed by the STRTC Steering Committee • Provided positive feedback overall • Concerned about the desired new TC name of “Space Structures” • Concerned that it will effectively narrow the scope of the STRTC • Aircraft v. Spacecraft • But where do launch vehicles go?

  8. Goals for 2012 - 2013 • Increase the committee’s activities in engineering education outreach • Have chartered Mike Wolff and the Education Subcommittee with this task • Hope to piggy back with Dynamics TC at 2013 SDM in Boston and present at a local school • Present a hands-on or demonstration of a cool Aerospace Structures technology • Participation from anyone on the TC, not just education subcommittee, is highly encouraged • Continued higher participation from the TC members • Some subcommittees could use a few more people • Formation of other relevant subcommittees is always welcome • Just come talk to me about what you would like to do • Help ease the transition to the New Event Model

  9. Upcoming TC Activities • New Members and Friends selection process • The nomination period for new technical committee members runs from August 1 – November 1 • Once the nomination period ends in November, all completed nomination forms are sent to the TC Chairs • The Structures TC Advisory Subcommittee and the Chair review the applicants • Updated TC Rosters are due by 31 Jan 2013 • The TC calendar year runs from 1 May – 30 April; thus the new members terms start on 1 May • Structures TC Annual Report will be sent to AIAA in January

  10. Backup

  11. Structures TC Membership – No changes since SDM • Currently, the Structures TC Membership includes: • 38 Members • 5 International Members • 4 Associate Members • 59 Friends • 106 Total • The Structures TC uses the “Friend” category to introduce newcomers to the TC • Committee membership is limited by AIAA to approximately 35 Members, so longstanding Members of the TC are returned to Friend status on an annual basis to make room for new Members • New member applications are evaluated at the end of each calendar year • New Members announced in April 2012 are: • Tomoya Ochinero (Structural Mechanics Corp) • Massimo Ruzzene (Georgia Tech) • Marc Schultz (NASA Langley Research Ctr) • Keith Belvin (NASA Langley Research Ctr) • The new Associate Members are: • Ali Najafi (AlphaStar Corporation) • Jimmy C. Ho – Science and Technology Corporation • New Friends of the TC are: • Luciano Demasi – (San Diego State Univ) • Troy Mann (NASA Langley Ctr) • Vipul Ranatunga (Miami University) • Wei Wu (GE Global Research) • Brandon Wegge (The Boeing Company)

  12. Student Paper Awards • Harry H. and Lois G. Hilton Student Paper Award • Lockheed Martin Student Paper Award • Both awards were presented to student papers in the Structures area at the 52nd SDM Conference • Thanks To Rob Taylor for organizing this very important subcommittee
