  1. The State of the State A “State of the State” speech by the “Governor” of Texas in 1860.

  2. INTRODUCTION • The state Constitution of Texas requires that the governor give a speech at the beginning of each legislative session. • This speech is called the “State of the State” address. • This is because the governor describes how he or she sees the condition of the state.

  3. Introduction Continues • In this project, you will take the role of the governor of Texas in 1860. • You will base your speech on the information provided to in a series of handouts and other information you gather through research. • Handouts • 10A • 10B • 10C • 10D • 10E

  4. Handouts • 10A and 10B • These handouts present key population and economic data from the official U.S. censuses of 1850 and 1860. • With this information you can see how the state changed in population and wealth by comparing the two sets of numbers.

  5. Please Note: • The two tables show the state’s rank among all the states in the country in the years 1850 and 1860. • The total number of states increased from 32 to 36 during that ten year period. • As a result, the state’s ranking needs to be viewed in relative terms – a 20th rank in 1860 is relatively higher than a 20th rank in 1850.

  6. Handouts • 10C and 10D • The photographs and paintings can reveal much about the daily lives of people in the past. • As you look at the pictures and paintings, what do you see in the images and what does it tell you about how Texas was changing in this period.

  7. Handouts • 10E • This handout includes two different perspectives on the issue of slavery. • Slavery is the major issue that was dividing the nation throughout the 1850s. • This handout will help you to understand the growing divisions between the North and the South.

  8. RESEARCH • You may use the computers to conduct research into the situation in Texas in 1850 and 1860. • You may wish to consider other issues important to the time, such as settlement of open areas of the state, security from Native Americans, growth of railroads, and shipping, and education.
