  1. PROVERBS 20

  2. PROVERBS 20:9EFFECTS OF THE FALL: DEATH TO ALL • Who can say, “I have made my heart pure; I am clean from my sin”? • People: good, sick or dead? • as it is written: “None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God. Romans 3:10-11 • Therefore, just as sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned— Romans 5:12 • And you were dead in the trespasses and sins Eph. 2:1

  3. PROVERBS 20:12GOD GIVES NEW LIFE • The hearing ear and the seeing eye, the LORD has made them both. • answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 • No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day. John 6:44 • But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ— by grace you have been saved— Ephesians 2:4-5

  4. PROVERBS 20:15THE GOSPEL IS BETTER • There is gold and abundance of costly stones, but the lips of knowledge are a precious jewel. • How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” Romans 10:14-15 • What about you?

  5. PROVERBS 20:24SOVEREIGNTY & DEPENDENCY • A man’s steps are from the LORD; how then can man understand his way? • Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all. 1 Chronicles 29:11-12 • God is sovereign & immanent. Your response?

  6. Creator – creation Distinction For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.  And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. Col 1:16-17 One Triune Creator Personal Sovereign God Independent Infinite Authority REVELATION Creation Dependent Finite Submissive

  7. PROVERBS 20:5,27CONSCIENCE: GOD’S GIFT • The purpose in a man’s heart is like deep water, but a man of understanding will draw it out. The spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD, searching all his innermost parts. • Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting! Psalm 139:23-24 • Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to make your calling and election sure, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. 2 Peter 1:10

  8. PROVERBS 20:6,7,11ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER • Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find? The righteous who walks in his integrity— blessed are his children after him! Even a child makes himself known by his acts, by whether his conduct is pure and upright. • “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me. John 14:15,24 • What will be your legacy?

  9. PROVERBS 20:2,8,26,28KINGS: GOD VS. PEOPLE • The terror of a king is like the growling of a lion; whoever provokes him to anger forfeits his life. A king who sits on the throne of judgment winnows all evil with his eyes. A wise king winnows the wicked and drives the wheel over them. Steadfast love and faithfulness preserve the king, and by steadfast love his throne is upheld. • For God is the King of all the earth; sing praises with a psalm! God reigns over the nations; God sits on his holy throne. Psalm 47:7-8

  10. PROVERBS 20:20SIN HAS CONSEQUENCES • If one curses his father or his mother, his lamp will be put out in utter darkness. • “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12 • For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Rom 6:23 • Someone must die for every sin: you or Christ

  11. PROVERBS 20:10,23STEALING IS SIN • Unequal weights and unequal measures are both alike an abomination to the LORD. Unequal weights are an abomination to the LORD, and false scales are not good. • “You shall not steal. Exodus 20:15 • But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, for he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil. Luke 6:35

  12. PROVERBS 20:14,17,21DECEIT & GREED ARE SIN • “Bad, bad,” says the buyer, but when he goes away, then he boasts. Bread gained by deceit is sweet to a man, but afterward his mouth will be full of gravel. An inheritance gained hastily in the beginning will not be blessed in the end. • You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet Exodus 20:16-17 • All is sacred. Nothing is secular. • So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. 1 Corinthians 10:31

  13. PROVERBS 20:25PROMISES • It is a snare to say rashly, “It is holy,” and to reflect only after making vows. • let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation. James 5:12 • “I do” What does that mean to you? To God? • Review your wedding vows

  14. PROVERBS 20:1,3SELF-CONTROL • Wine is a mocker, strong drink a brawler, and whoever is led astray by it is not wise. It is an honor for a man to keep aloof from strife, but every fool will be quarreling. • But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:22-24 • The Holy Spirit changes the redeemed

  15. PROVERBS 20:4,13SLOTH • The sluggard does not plow in the autumn; he will seek at harvest and have nothing. Love not sleep, lest you come to poverty; open your eyes, and you will have plenty of bread. • Do not be deceived: God is not mocked, for whatever one sows, that will he also reap. And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. Galatians 6:7,9

  16. PROVERBS 20:19, 22 WHO CAN YOU TRUST? • Whoever goes about slandering reveals secrets; therefore do not associate with a simple babbler. Do not say, “I will repay evil”; wait for the LORD, and he will deliver you. • Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink.” Romans 12:19-20 • Trust God. Do you?

  17. PROVERBS 20:30THE ATONEMENT: THE GREAT EXCHANGE • Blows that wound cleanse away evil; strokes make clean the innermost parts. • But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5 • but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8 • For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.

  18. YOUR RESPONSE? • For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8-10 • I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2
