  6. Initial Goals • Enhance health in all grades. • Enhance physical education in all grades. • Encourage students to advocate for their own wellness. • Review the process of evaluating student progress. • Remain compliant and informed of all state mandates

Hatboro Horsham Knowledge Gained • Affirmation of quality of our programs and curriculum and instruction techniques • The use of a Fitness Certification to assure knowledge of use and safety procedures of fitness equipment-Implemented 9/2013 • Student excitement with Spin bikes -Implemented at MA 9/2013 • Importance of community involvement for curriculum instruction and facilities • The need for the development of a program to monitor student progress and report outto parents.

  10. Research The team did research on current studies relevant to physical activity and learning. • by reading the book: Spark The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise and the Brain by John J. Ratay. • by reading the CDC report (2010): The Association Between School-Based Physical Activity, Including Physical Education, and Academic Performance. • By reading the work of Stuart Shore, Ph.D.: Decreased Scholastic Achievement in Overweight Middle School Children Scientists now confirm that…….. • Physical activity sparks biological changes that encourage brain cells to bind to one another allowing the brain to adapt to challenges. • Exercise provides an unparallel stimulus, creating an environment in which the brain is ready, willing, and able to learn. (neurotransmitters)

  11. Research 20 Montgomery County schools and top achieving schools were surveyed to determine if they include health and physical education in students GPA.

  12. 10 Students were chosen to show GPA with Health and PE included in GPA. (Athletes, non-athletes, girls, boys, high achievers and low achievers)

Rationale for Including Health and PE in GPA • Students’ investment in Health and PE is observably less than in other curricular areas due to the lack of academic weight in Health and PE in comparison to other disciplines. • Health and PE would be aligned with all other subjects at the high school such as Art, Music, Photography and Ceramics. • All Encore classes at Pine Road and Murray Avenue are aligned in grading practices. • Physical Education electives are included in GPA (Sports Mgmt and Fitness: Total Body Challenge) • High achieving school districts include health and physical education in GPA. (Unionville, Radnor and Great Valley) • 15 Montgomery County Schools include health and PE in students GPA. (Lower Merion, North Penn, Springfield to name a few) • Students who perform well in health and PE are disappointed that their achievement is not recognized in their GPA.

Survey Feedback - Parents • Most parents, students and staff are satisfied with the Health and PE program • Positive Feedback from PR parents about how students are making healthy food choices • Not many parents refer to the Health/PE website • Would like more communications to be sent home (Newsletters, info packets) • Overall need to strengthen the Health program • High School expressed an interest in having more guest speakers in health (Nurses, Doctors) • Parents at PR wanted more physical activity time and requested that health not be taught during gym time. • Parents would like the continuation of students graded on effort, participation and sportsmanship

Survey Feedback -Teachers 49 teachers were surveyed • 100% felt both health and physical education are valuable to Lower Moreland students education. • 88% believe both health and physical education should be included in students GPA • Activities staff would like to see offered before or after school for staff are: • CPR • Stress reduction • Yoga • Pilates • Staff only hours for the high school fitness center

Recommendations • Enhance health in all grades: by incorporating guest speakers, visual aids, current technology and develop an updated curriculum. • Enhance physical education in all grades: by providing innovative and current programs and equipment, include more authentic assessment, teach to the core concepts and develop an updated curriculum. • Encourage students to advocate for their own wellness • Include health and physical education in students’ GPAs.

Recommendations • Purchase a program to track students performance to show strengths and weaknesses and develop a communication method to parents. • Provide newslettersand improve web sites to increase community involvement and communication. • Health and physical education teachers offer opportunities to assist in students academic achievement. Movement increases cognition.

  29. Wellness Update • Co-Chairpersons:  Dr. Richmond, Carol Lusignea • Committee Members: Staff members from all buildings including HPE Staff, Classroom teachers, Support staff, Nutrition Inc. • GOAL:  To improve, monitor and maintain healthy school environments for students and staff.

Pine Road • Beginning a school wide discussion at Pine Road regarding birthday treats. • Promoting “Heart Month” in February • “Wednesday Wakeup”: televised monthly exercise routine for simultaneous school wide participation. • "Wednesday Wakeup" previously televised routines are accessible anytime for classroom teachers for brain breaks. • "Fitness Fun Room" is used by classroom teachers as a reward for students.  • Students are enjoying the Running Club.
