Maryland Science Content Standard • Students will be able to provide examples and explain that organisms sorted into groups share similarities in external structures as well as similarities in internal anatomical structures and processes which can be used to infer the degree of relatedness among organisms 2

  3. Objectives: • Students will be able to identify the characteristics shared by all living things. • Students will be able to describe the functions carried out by all living things

  4. What Do You Think? • If you saw a weird glop of green ooze moving, what would you do to figure out if it were a live?

  5. Today Students Will… • Explain the characteristics of living things by taking notes on the properties of life. • Extend their thinking on the properties of life by applying them to a debatable example. • Evaluate their understanding of the properties of life by answering the question “Do you think fire is a living thing?”

  6. Complete Properties of Life Notes • Using pages 6-9 of the From Bacteria to Plants,complete the notes page on the properties of life. • You have been given the mnemonic OGRRE to help you remember them.

  7. Sammy Story • When does a living thing become non-living? • Keep the 8 characteristics of life in your mind! • After we read through the story • Identify if/when you think Sammy died • If Sammy is not alive at the story’s end, exactly when (at which step) did Sammy stop being alive? • Write a paragraph explaining your views. Be sure to clearly state the step at which you believe he died. Support your view with what you have learned about the characteristics of life.

  8. Conclusion • Do you think fire is a living things? • Give at least 3 reasons why or why not.
