  1. Aberration Profiles of Anterior Corneal Surface and Internal Optics of Asian Eyes: Preliminary Study Khairidzan Mohd Kamal MD IIUM Eye Specialist Clinic International Islamic University Malaysia Kuantan, Malaysia

  2. Financial Disclosure Authors have no financial interest in the material presented

  3. Introduction Aberration degrades the quality of vision. With the development of wavefront analyzer, it is possible to measure and to correct the higher order aberration during laser refractive surgery. There are three possible contribution to total aberration of the ocular optical system: Anterior Cornea Curvature Posterior Cornea Curvature Lens Most wavefront analyzer measures the total aberration of the eye but the contribution of each components of ocular refractive media was less explored. We sought to evaluate the aberration profiles of anterior cornea surface and its relationship with total and internal optics aberration.

  4. Purpose Pupil size To evaluate anterior corneal surface aberration and internal optics aberration To study the relationship between Types of Aberration Refractiveerror Methods Strategy Subjects Tools Measurements • Cross sectional • Prospectives • Observational Study • 54 subjects • 108 eyes • 16 males / 38 females • Inclusion Criteria • Not wearing contact lens • Never had ocular surgery • No history of ocular trauma WASCA wavefront analyzer (CZM) and Atlas CT9000 Corneal topography (CZM) Specific measurement Spherical, Coma, Trefoil aberration Internal optics aberration = Total aberration – anterior corneal surface aberration • Total Higher order aberration • Anterior corneal surface aberration

  5. Results How do aberration profiles of anterior corneal surface and the Internal optics appear after the calculation? Patient with minimal higher order aberration Patient with higher order aberration

  6. Results There is negative correlation for spherical aberration, coma, trefoil between anterior corneal surface and the Internal optics Is there any correlation between the higher order aberrations of the anterior corneal surface and the Internal optics ? Table 1 Correlation coefficient of spherical aberration, coma and trefoil between anterior surface of cornea and internal optics aberrations

  7. Results Which components of higher order aberrations is most related to pupil diameter? Can we predict the higher order aberrations based on refractive error? No direct relationship

  8. Conclusions • Spherical aberration, coma and trefoil revealed opposite sign between anterior corneal surface and internal optics aberration. • Different in sign between anterior corneal surface and internal optics aberration indicates the existence of compensation. • Significant coupling of individual Zernicke terms do exist between corneal and internal optics aberration. • There is definite relationship between size of the pupil, higher order aberration and spherical aberration
