You will often have to pay for something using coins and banknotes that add up to more than the item you are buying. Here you could use £1 coin Here you could use a £5 note and a £2 coin Here you could use 2 £1 coins and a 10p coin If this is the case then you would get change back.

  16. Calculating change 3 You can calculate change by counting on for any value up to a pound using just two steps. Step 1 Count on to the next 10 Step 2 Count forward in 10s until you reach 100p (£1) and then add both your answers together. How much change will I have from £1.00 if I pay for a bottle of water costing 44p? Step 1 Count forward starting at 44p to the next 10, which is 50p 44 45 46 47 48 49 50 Answer: 6p 6 1 2 3 4 5 Step 2 Count forward in 10s from 50 till you reach 100p (£1) 50 60 70 80 90 100 Answer: 50p Add together 50p + 6p = 56p 10 20 30 40 50
